Dear Sirs:
It happens at times: a manufacturer moves to a large scale and then stays there. This is the case with Mira from Spain. It is known by its 1/18 models now, but in the past it had an array of 1/64 vehicles, including an european Chrysler 150 and some fiats. It was not a big amount of vehicles but the Chrysler is an interesting one.

Dear Sirs:
Latin American also have toy manufacturers. Argentina had Aguti,Buby and Galgo.
Buby exists since at least late 1950's and production ended by the 1980's. It is interesting to notice that by the 1980's only Buby produced an 1/64 version of the Chevrolet Nova. Their array of models also include a series of Renaults (12 or 18, similar to the Brazilian Ford Corcel), a very interesting Opel Ambulance, Maserati, Chevrolet van Ford Bronco and the only Mustang II Fastback I know in 1/64. Trucks- Fiat,Chevrolet or Mercedes - were produced, but these are close to 1/100 scale. The list gets more interesting: Citroen, described as a 3 CV,Fiat 1500 (similar to the Matchbox one),1960 Ford Falcon (even as a racer),Peugeot 504.Mercedes 350 SL, 4-door Ford Sierra, and one of the few models of the Volkswagen Gacel (Fox) and a beautiful Bertone Trapeze show car (I have the Norev version) among others.
This manufacturer also made buses in 1/64; Mercedes-Benz, with private operators liveries similar to the ones which run in Buenos Aires. A Dukes of Hazzard car was also molded ( based on their Mustang II) and A-Team van. Not bad of a lay-out; their models are on the reasonable range. They also had a 1/43 scale range and these are not cheap if found. On the past, few mail-order places had their wares; today,as anything else, these can be found on eBay.
Scarce items from them will be the ones made at the early 1960's.

Dear Sirs: Playart is being discovered by the collectors, thanks to eBay. One of their Rovers (the one before the 3500) was sold as $76.00; and one their Lancia Stratos fell apart on my hands eight or so years ago. I found it,but I lost it.The rarest of the lot is the DAF sedan; saw it twice at eBay,and these went with over $20.00.Their Batmobile can command heavy bidding and high prices; so does their Alfa Romeo P33 and another one that does not show very often is their Volkswagen Samba van. I got two of these because their were damaged; the 'healthy' ones also command heavy bidding and high prices. The rear doors of this models open and along with its detailed front bumper, these are very sucesptible to damage.Another one is the circa 1974 Mazda Cosmo; by now, even with the 1/43 Ebbros around, that is the only model of it. The Alpine 110 is also a nice model, along the Volkswagen-Porsche 914 and they offered one of the very few 1977 Chevrolet Caprices, either as sedans, police car, taxi, fire chief, etc. And it did not stopped here;their car listings are extensive and fairly well modeled. Their were last sold at Sears and before that at Woolworth's. If one can find one of the latter in the pack, expect to pay up to $30.00 for these. Oh,there are Volvo models as well; I think that the 164 is one of these. Two of the ones which appeared at eBay are listed below. Playart also released models in other scales, including 1/18. There was also a Double-Decker bus with liveries from Singapore,in 1/64; I also saw a larger one in a toy show. A diving submarine was also offered by them; it circles around, dives and them comes up.Battery Operated. That was not only that: trains were offered as well and these also offered at eBay and these do command high bids and so on;locomotives are also part of the roster. Model Power are their sucessors and some of Playart's 1/64 vehicles were offered by the latter. cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4215300258&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:ITcgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6910412175&ssPageName=STRK:MEBI:IT

Dear Sirs:
Aguti from Argentina offered a small range of cars and that included the Ford Ambulance, based on the F-100 pick-up. I was hoping that to be the model of the SUV that was made in Brazil (see Latin American Cars) but it is not; just a pick-up with a covered bed and a red cross at its roof; no emergency lightning (or slick top,I believe). Another car is the bettle and there are others. Probably is me,but the casting of these items do not seem to be so good.I tried to clean the Bettle's chassi, and the passenger's side broke off, along with one of the wheels. It may not happen to all of its vehicles. It is claimed that it copied some Matchbox models, such as the Datsun 126 X.

Dear Sirs:
At least some good news from the realm of Matchbox. The Superfast series were re-introduced,and no 'imaginary' cars are being molded at this series. Supposedly, only 10,000 copies of each car are made. The car and a box are inside a blisterpack;accordingly, if the info is right,Superfast models were introduced 35 years ago ( and that is right).
Vehicles include the Cadillac Escalade,Chevrolet Avalanche,1970 Plymouth Cuda and others. The cars are very detailed,as opposed to the 1-75 series and the chrome wheels are the biggest feature here. These retail around $2.00; no bad price.
New from Playing Mantis/Johnny Lightning is the 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air at their Muscle Machines series. That it is superbly done and the details are correct,be it the wheels (red and a small silver hubcap) and twin parking lights at the rear. Fact is,this is the first non-1950's Bel Air rendered in 1/64. The Byscaine exists too,but in 1/18. Maybe. This new series of cars also includes a 1970 Malibu, 1971 Challenger and others that do not seem to be new tooling.
The name of the Company is Funrise, and Muscle Machines are their series. In the past they also molded a series of extreme 4 x 4 vehicles (read monster trucks) and the only to offer a 4-door Dodge Dakota Pick-up. Take all the 4 x 4 equipment out and it will be all right; it seems that they did 'normal' trucks too,but I do not know if the Dakota is one of these. The Muscle Machines are 'funky' to say the least; their Import Series were more realistic and the Subaru WRX was included at this series. New from them is a series of vehicles from a TV show ( a believe) and these have working features from the real conversion. Vehicles include a School bus that can be used as a pontoon as well (and one see its the half of it rear side sitting at the ground and trash vehicle (SUV of some sort;its roof-along with the passenger side rear door goes up) and Switchblade (a convertible with opening features).
From Hot Wheels, a Dodge Neon and a Maserati Quatropporte are part of their 'First Edition' series. The latter may be difficult to find.
Any more news will be passed on as they are found.

Dear Sirs:
I won the Playart Lancia Stratos and a Norev Peugeot. Another wins include Motormax Mercedes-Benz 'C' Class sedan and an Opel Frontera.I also got the 1962 Bel Air from the topic above and the Avalanche Superfast model. I still looking for the Zylmex Plymouth Fury taxi and Lindberg Buick Riviera, both a 'toughie' to find.

Dear Sirs:
Since the discussion about the Ford Pinto is going at the members area,I will state that this vehicle saw some miniature renditions. One was made,on around 1/55 scale by Zylmex/Zee Toys (got that last year) and the wagon was reproduced by Hot Wheels (as a panel van-1/64 scale- with several liveries, including Incredible Hulk). I do not know if it graduated as a promo.
The Chevy Vega also had a fair amount of models in 1/64. Zylmex/Zee Toys made a model of it; Hot Wheels had a dragster version and the best version was the one made by Lindberg (very accurate wheels and the car looks right, too).
AMC's Gremlin was offered by Hot Wheels as a regular version or dragster;the second one comes from Lindberg and again, the model looks quite accurate.I also got the Miny Lindy one last year. The Pacer was reproduced as a wagon by Hot Wheels. Tomica made the sedan, and that was copied by a company from Hong Kong. A superb model came around 1999 by RCE (their mint series). A cheapo version of it was offered as well,by the same company.
Chrysler's 'Captive Imports' such as the Mitsubishi Galant from the 1970's that was rebadged as a Dodge or Plymouth was offered by Matchbox.Interestingly, this car had either a higher number than 75 (belonged to the 1-75 series) and/or was part of the Japanese series. It also part of the regular 1-75 series, but with other graphics on.

Dear Sirs:
Making a follow-up at the Saab models,Matchbox did released the Sonnet at the early 1970's and this is a very nice model; at the same period,Yat ming molded their model (the rear hatch does not open as does the Matchbox one).Majorette had the 900 series,I believe and Matcbox launched the new one which debuted by 1988. There were promos as well, altough these were on 1/20 scale and manufactured in Finland.

Dear Sirs:
High-end makes made well in 1/64,be it Cadillac,Lincoln,Mercedes-Benz,BMW,Lexus or Infiniti.
Lincoln is represented by the circa 1964 Continental by Matchbox;Mark III by Lindberg,Mark IV by Tomica and Yat Ming;Mark V by Matchbox and 1988 Town Car by Matchbox. The circa 1958 Premiere was Molded by Playing Mantis/Johnny Lightning, and there is a 1940's Lincoln as well, but I am not sure who manufactured it.
Cadillac is well represented, starting with a circa 1935 model by Hot Wheels;a circa 1953 model was molded by the same company, but as a McDonald's give-away ( the Kid's Meal giveeaways are done by Mattel for McDonalds'these are not,at most cases, part of the Hot Wheels line). Mattel also provided a circa 1957 and the extravagant 1959 convertible (so did Playing Mantis/Johnny Lightning about the latter). The final Eldorado Convertibes and hardtops from the 1970's were offered by Playart and Lindberg;Playing mantis.Johnny Lightning brought a Pace Car model.Of late, there is a circa 1977 four door De Ville by Tomica and Yat ming;circa 1996 Seville by Tootsetoys and a circa 1999 De Ville by Maisto. Alas,Hot Wheels 1958 Cadillac was considered a high notch model;excellen represantation of the real car; Matchbox also offered one as one of the first 1-75 models. Finally, the Allante was offered by Matchbox and Majorette.
Chrysler make is the top of the line from Chrysler Corporation.Yet,no many miniatures were made of it in 1/64.The Imperial, which at times was a separate make, was offered,as circa 1964 model,by Lone Star. If these can count, the circa 1984 Town & County convertible was offered by Road Champs and there are miriads of PT cruisers-Playing Mantis/Johnny Lightning,Matchbox,Motormax,Maisto,Chinese brand and perhaps more. The prototypes-a two door version was molded by Hot Wheels and Maisto; a roadster was offered by Maisto when these were refered as Plymouths.
I will not even try to go after the Mercedes-Benz offerings, just mention that Siku,Corgi Jr,Hot Wheels,Matchbox,Playing Mantis.Johnny Lightning,Maisto,Welly,Motormax,Playart,Yatming,Guisval,Buby-to mention a few-offered a ton of models from this manufacturer.Siku will offer the oldest ones; from the 1960's on, Matchbox will be a good source; the remaining are for 1970's - current models. My pick will be: the 450 SE from Matchbox and the 240 D from Corgi Jr.Alas,Welly has a good amount of the modern ones,be it the C or E series;I got several of them from this manufacturer.Majorette had decent representations from the circa 1984 190 E;Hot Wheels also did offered the SLR series. And many more,of course, and I am not bothering with the SUV's.The convertibles and the Gullwing version was decently reproduced by Corgi Jr.
I do not know of any BMW 501 models in 1/64;Siku may have done some of these.A decent amount of the 3 and 7 series exist.Majorette,Corgi Jr,Matchbox,Hot Wheels,Playing Mantis/Johnny Lightning,Motormax,Welly have a good selection of models, especially of the 1990's roadsters. No models of the current 745i yet;I hope Welly does it (it offers this car in other scales).Again, most of the BMW;s are current (1960's on) models.
The Lexus is represented quite well. All series-I,G,LS are repoduced. The LS is offered either as a Lexis or Toyota Celsior (Zee Toys for Lexus;Tomica for Toyota and it offers a couple of Generations of it). The I series is offered by Maisto or Jada Toys;the G series is offered by Jada Toys. The roadster is also represented by Jada Toys.
Infinity has a model amd it is Nissan Counterpart,by Tomica.
Of course that there is more.I will deal with these on the next thread.

Dear Sirs:
Proceeding with the high-end makes,Rolls Royces were always avaliable from Matchbox;this ended by the Tyco period.ERTL also had one,and so did Tomica and Yat ming.Hot Wheels also molded one of these, but as a custom.Playart and Zee Toys had a two-door version At the moment,I do not see any renditions of the new one, which I consider quite ugly.
From the makes from the past,Packards also have very few renditions, the current one being the Caribbean Convertible from RCE.They did a good job at that;nice additiion at any scale.
Duesenberg also go reprduced. One of these was a 1931,4-door model by Hot Wheels. The molds from this model was recently destroyed (last run series).A SJ type convertible was offered by RCE and this is a nice three-incher;very well captured and impressive as the real model was.
These may fall under exotics, but they are equally as expensive makes such as Lamborghini,Lancia,Ferrarri,De Tomaso and so on.Next thread,a listing of these exotics.Keep posted.

Dear Sirs:
This is a little comment about this scale.
Granted, most of the cars are toys, but by being so,the manufacturers of these can offer a wider variety of models. The American Muscle series from ERTL can be called models, because these had all the details from the real cars, and the chassi was not held by screws or rivets,as the real thing, and most the underframe detail were separate parts. Also, the engine block had the right color,as the real vehicle. State of the art has different peceptions over time. The first Matchbox models were considered as so at their time, and the above-described ERTL model may look crude years from now. This is a concept that one has to aware of.
The other is the definition of toy.At cases,it is difficult to do a clear definition what a toy or model is.Some of the Matchboxes can pass as models;yet some Solidos can be considered toys and the early Wikings were at the between yet some of the 50 year old Wikings have an amazing array of details.
Taken these facts on consideration, from the modern 1/64 manufacturers,Welly will give a lot of detail for their vehicles, and these are dollar toys.Yet,their Vic police cruiser has computer detail at its interior,a good amount of detail underneath and some of their NYPD versions were sold between $35.00 and $81.00 at eBay.The other cars look good too but these are just that-toy-ish renditions of the real car. However, their Mercedes vehicles and 1965 Pontiac GTO are very well captured and their 2001 Impala looks good at the photos (never seen the real thing).Along with Motormax, these are the second highest detailed toy one can get.
Motormax is what used to be Zee Toys.Yet,their newer cars-introduced 2001- are very well detailed, but the wheels leave a lot to be desired.Source of many unique car models; hope that they keep up.Adittionally, these are easier to find than the Wellys.
Playing Mantis is a top of the line model;yet it pales when is put opposite to ERTL's Muscle Machine replicas.Yet.the models are well captured and it is the source of several unique models, including the Nash Metropolitan and Tucker Torpedo. All in all,Tom Lowe's company is always modeling a replica of a vehicle that was not on 1/64 before.
Small players include Auto Art which are extremally well captured vehicles. As one magazine article put it:it seems that the company used a magical wand and reduced some of their 1/18 models to 1/64.I did not heard if new models will be released in the future, what would be a shame.Golden Wheels also have a selection of cars, and their Checker and 1950 Chevrolet are quite good renditions;the same can be said of their circa 1950 Oldsmobile coupe. It seems that like Hongwell,Golden Wheels is also connecetd to many other firms.Tiger Wheels -based on Pyerto Rico, but the models were from Anson- are fair to spectacular renditions, but the wheels are not that good. The Buick Riviera and 1970 Maverick are the superb pieces.
Matchbox,Mattel and Maisto are all well known by now so not many comments will be made.On Maisto's case, too bad that their 1/64 do not have interiors.Up to now, this company has the highest line of show car models.I will list these in the future.Their show car offerings are still current.
Realtoy and Fast Lane deserve some credit, too because they also released several unique models and/or were quick to offer new models of Jeep Gran Cherokees or Mustangs.Lately, fast lane is offering bizarelly painted Motormax models;yet,at sets, some of their older and/or non-Motormax offerings are avaliable.
Siku popularized 1/55 model cars.Again, except for the wheels at same cases, the cars are very good replicas and good source for German car models.Majorette is a good source for french models,as is Norev, and both companies make very good reproductions. The Renault Fuego and Simca Horizon from Norev are very good.Incidentally,Majorette was the first who offered top pf the line 1/64 models;the ones from Matchbox came prior or after these.
Tomica completes the list and their vehicles were scaled and well reproduced;mostly japanese replicas.Give these a tweak or two,and they will look good indeed. There are many replicas which were very good reproductions of the real thing, but their special series Toyota AA tops them all.
There are more,of course, but these are the major ones. One thing to be remembered is: these are considered toys, yet,at least, there are a replica of a specific vehicle that at times, like Maisto's 2000 Cadillac de Ville,no one is offering as a miniature.
Nascar will be represented by RCE or Action. The former had a series of cars called the Mint series and these are also top of the line 1/64 models.

Dear Sirs:
Ah,Playing Mantis/Johnny Lightning.....
Up to now,the only Karmann-Ghia Coupe that existed in 1/64 was molded,in plastic,by AB (the Vallassis Brothers). No interior and a tad crude.
Playing Mantis released,at their Volkswagen Series, their 1963 Karmann Ghia Coupe.Red,white top,and it is quite nice as the rest of the cars that they do.This series also features the new Volkswagen Transporter;a nice item indeed and I think that is a tad better than the Matchbox version.
Also,at their Hot Rod series, the Studebaker Golden Hawk. The only 1/64 model of it that I know was made by Hubley,40 years ago!
Matchbox 'new' superfast series are not to be found at the stores;yet, models, such as the new generation Corvette, are popping at eBay (and these are 'top of the line' matchboxes). Equally impressive is the top of the line from Hot Wheels: 1957 Ford Crown Victoria;all the details, including the green,'plastic' top,or their 1949 Ford wagon.
Still looking for the Hot Wheels Maserati Quatropporte.Ebay,maybe.

Dear Sirs:
I discovered these guys at eBay and never noticed that MAR mentioned them once in a while. It is Biante,an Australian manufacturer of 1/18,1/43 and 1/64 models. The latter ones seem to be at the same level as ERTL muscle cars;lots of detail. Goes without saying that the main subject are Australian cars;several generations of Holdens are molded by them and I am interested in the Monaro most(it is a case of Opel Rekord/Chevrolet Opala badge sharing). Also they do have a good variety of Falcons and Australian racing vehicles (specially the ones from Kmart and that was MAR's coverage).Of course,Utes are molded too.An enormous surprise would be a 1/64 model of the Leyland P76 sedan, but I do not think so.
As stated,on the Holden front, there are several generations and models of this maker avaliable. The Fords are seen limited to the Falcon, specially the newer ones. There are Commodore models as well, including the one that became the new GTO.
They also seem connected to Auto Art.

Dear Sirs:
Maisto markets its three inch cars as 3" Transit Authority Series. According to its site, this year many new cars will be released. These are:
15001-00000000_174 Opel Eco-Speedster 15001-00000000_206 Blue Voodoo Motorcycle 15001-00000000_207 Pontiac G6 Concept 15001-00000000_208 GM High-Wire Concept 15001-00000000_209 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Concept 2003 15001-00000000_210 Chevrolet Cheyenne Pick up Concept 2003 15001-00000000_211 Cadillac Sixteen Concept 2003 15001-00000000_212 Buick Centieme concept 2003 15001-00000000_213 Jeep Rescue Concept 15001-00000000_214 Hummer H3T Pick up concept 15001-00000000_215 Pontiac Solstice Convertible 2006 15001-00000000_216 Ford F-150 FX4 Pick up 2004 15001-00000000_217 Dodge Charger R/T 1969 15001-00000000_218 Chrysler 300 C 2005 15001-00000000_219 Lamborghini Miura 1966 15001-00000000_220 Toyota Scion xB 15001-00000000_221 Toyota Celica GT-S 15001-00000000_222 Dodge Super 8 Hemi Concept 2001 15001-00000000_223 Off Road Warrior 15001-00000000_224 Delivery Van 15001-00000000_225 Ford Tonka F-350 Mighty
Notice that a good amount of these are concept vehicles (Maisto loves to mold this kind of vehicles; I would expect a Buick Y-job from them, but they only get around the newer concepts), some are current vehicles on the road and some are classic cars. The Off Road warrior (actually a late 1980's Ford F-150 pick up) and the delivery van (Ford Econovan) are one of the very first Maistos; these come with new graphics. I think that I heard of the Ford Tonka pick up and that resembles the Ford Ecuator concept; is a 4-door version, and the rear doors are 'suicidal' type.
A couple of years ago, this company 'toyed' with the ideia to mold 'custom' vehicles as Mattel and the result was that these remained at the pegs, unsold. Only one was announced this year: the Blue Voodoo motorcycle.
Their 1999 Ford Police Interceptor was discontinued.
One criticizm: they still carrying their policy of vehicles with no interiors. That is a shame, because the shape of the cars is perfect; detailed, these look great. The lack of interiors put these into the 'dime-toy' area. Too bad. According to the site.some of the new releases, such as the Tonka Ford, are shown with interiors, along the Chrysler 300 C. I hope that this will happen.
