Dear Sirs:
Some of these are toys, some are models and the scale of these varies from 1/48 to 1/76.Yet their variety is very high right now and at the introduction of this thread I will concentrate on the models that are difficult to find or exist only at this scale:
AB Karmann Ghia Coupe, plastic Golden Wheel 1949 Oldsmobile Coupe ERTL Maserati Quatroporte,1980's model Hot Wheels Ford Fairmont Hot Wheels Dodge Mirada Hot Wheels Dodge Aries Wagon Hot Wheels Oldsmobile Fastback Road Champs Chrysler Le Baron,1980's Road Champs Buick Riviera,1980's Matchbox Skoda sedan,1980's Stomper AMC Eagle Tootsetoys Cadillac Seville STS Jada Toys Cadillac CTS Welly,Jada Toys GMC Yukon Playart Mazda Cosmo Tomica Toyota Megacruiser Tiger Wheels 1966 Buick Riviera Matchbox Mercury Cougar Villager Wagon Zee Toys Oldsnobile Dragster Zee Toys 1914 Vauxhall Hartoy Dodge Ramcharger
And so on.There is several cars or vehicles that did not graduated to 1/64 and as 1/87,the cars at least do not take this much space.

Dear Sirs:
Majorette was the first to release models that had more details than most. Its Rolls Royce was just amazing; there were other cars at that series as well. The ideia spread, and Matchbox released super-detailed cars.Johnny Lightning cost $3.00 due to the fact that these are all-metal and very detailed, but nothing beats the American Muscle from Racing Champions/ERTL.All panels opened, the engines were correctly painted and the cars, such as the Chrysler 300 and '62 Pontiac were superb. And,as the real car.there were no rivets or screws at the chassi.Due to any reason, these are not made any longer, but a good amount of cars were produced. Racing Champions produced a series of very detailed cars from 1996 to around 1998 as well, and their 1950 Chevy 3100 pick-up had some details such as engine air filter! In the 1980's,Road Champs released a Mercedes 2-door that was not as detailed as the models above;yet, the rear tailight lenses were separate pieces. On the diificult to find issue, this Hong Kong company modeled a 1980's Oldsmobile Cutlass that had a little motor.I never saw this piece after I bought it and so far I know that the only miniature from this car.Its companion was a 1982 Toyota Celica (I did not get that).

Dear Sirs:
Currently,Jada Toys and Playing Mantis/Johnny Lightning are the one who are offering an interesting variety of models in 1/64:
Playing Mantis/Lightining offers the 1962 Pontiac Catalina,1968 Plymouth Barracuda,1948 Tucker,Nash Metropolitan,1974 Dodge Monaco,Honda Civic 4-door,AMC Hornet,AMC 'the Machine',1963 Ford Mustang show car,1967 Ford Thunderbird,Studebaker Pick-up,1966 Chevelle,1959 and 1966 el Camino,1971 Dodge Dart Demon and many more.Thing is,since 1994,they been releasing vehicles that were not offered in this scale and at times in no other scales. Jada Toys roster is also interesting, but 'lowered' and at the cost of loss of detail.I try to get the ones that are as 'original' as possible. They have Joe's project-1962 Cadillac 62 series convertible;also 1953 Chevrolet,1947 Cadillac,Cadillac CTS,Honda Civic,Lexus G an I series,1947 Chevy,Chevrolet Astro van,1957 Chevrolet panel van,1959 Cadillac,1971 Monte Carlo are offered.Their 1996 Impala SS is superb to my eyes Racing Champions also released an interesting line of vehicles, including the Studebaker with the 'plane' front end,but this is at its past.I always expect interesting models from either Lightning or Jada Toys.

Dear Sirs:
It is mentioned that popular large scales for trucks are 1/50.
In 1/64,ERTL introduced the trend by offering the 'trucks of the world series' by the late 1970's.Macks,Pets and Kenworth were offered and these came with a variety of trailers. Winross was well known,US built, and toy-ish and on business from the 1960's-at least.Yet,the molded White models that were unique to this scale and I think that these were not offered in other scales.GMC and Ford trucks were offered, and many, many trucking company logos were offered. They owners retired by 2001 and that was a shock wave at the truck modeling world. The company is back, and I think that the models are built elsewhre and the vehicles are more detailed. Hartoy and Penjoy debuted at the late 1980's and they were a 'promo' manufacturer from the beggining.Oustanding detail;Kenworths, such as the T600 and T2000 are offered;these are top of the line models. Matchbox did offered some british trucks at the scale;the Scammel pipe truck is my favorite.

Dear Sirs:
Code 3 started business by the late 1980's and one of their first articles were mini-fire trucks;some of these were compatible to 'N' Gauge. They also had a series of Ford Crown Victoria State Police cars in 1/24 scale. By the 1990's,their Seagrave Fire truck was introduced and it would be used for several departments without modifications. A bit later, this company would something that no one did before:mold several different fire truck chassis. The other manufacturers,if they manufacture a say,an ALF fire truck,it would use it until the mold would fall apart.Code 3,up to 2000,had at least 5 different fire trucks that I can remember of besides the Seagrave, and their Crown was a very desired piece.Unknown chassis such a Luverne from Chicago were introduced as well. Their best piece was the vehicles from the TV show 'Emergency One'-the Dodge unit,Crown and Ward La France Fire truck. The Station 51 was molded as well, and well, that was a very nice item ( the diorama people from this board would have loved it). I do not know what they are doing now;the last new item that I remember was the equally superb Oskosh Airport Fire Unit. The Fire trucks buffs really liked their stuff and were quick to point their shortcomings and it seems that these were correceted. Boley seems to be following their example and this a benefit for the HO collectors. They are offering the S & S,Seagrave,International,GMC and if I am not wrong,an Oshkosh Airport Fire Unit.Athearn,on the other hand, just has the Ford 'C' series and NJ international molds the Ford and Pierce units only.Majorette's ALF is compatible to HO,and is being used to death (even as rocket launcher,if you can believe that). And yes,I agree:Code 3 vehicles are larger as opposed to they 1/87 counterparts.

Dear Chester:
Depending of the prototype, the size would vary from 6 to 7 inches in lenght (an HO,40 footer city bus goes at six inches).Lenghts and heights are on the 1 1/2 inch range.
I do not know what an Addy handy is.Code 3 is on the net;most of its (new;avaliable) vehicles are posted.

Dear Sirs:
Police cars fared well in 1/64.
Mattel did offered the Dodge Monaco and Holden Commodore;Matchbox had the Ford Galaxie,Mercury Parklane,Plymouth Fury,Ford LTD,Ford Crown Victoria;ERTL offered the 1980 Pontiac Bonneville,1974 Dodge Monaco and Majorette had the only model of the 1970 Plymouth Fury;Yatming had the Dodge Coronet,Monaco,Caprice Classic (a bit smaller than 1/64).Golden Wheel ofered the 1950 Chevy 4-door and Checker Marathon Police cars.Tyco had a 1972 Plymouth Satellite Slot racer. There are a good amount of manufacturers who are offering the current/1997 Ford Crown Victoria. Matchbox,Golden Wheel,Johnny Lightning did offer the 1997 Ford Vic;Racing Champions,Authenticast,Welly,Motormax,Maisto,Realtoy,Fast Lane did offered the Vic Mk II. Very few of these will come with real department Markings.Welly had NYPD,CHP,LAPD marked to their cruisers;Racing Champions had city police departments and the ones from Authenticast were State Police. The Checker from Golden Wheel had 1960's NYPD livery in it.Johnny Lightning offered the 1974 Dodge Monaco,1963 Ford,1966 Ford Fairlane,1990 Ford LTD in several Police Department liveries, including Puerto Rico. The final Caprice was offered by Racing Champions,Yatming,Golden Wheels,Johnny Lightning. Most of these, except for the Yatming, had city police markings on them. Majorette molded the 1980's Impala;generic or CHP markings of them.Playart released the 1977 Caprice as a generic police cars British and German police cars were realeased by Matchbox;Maisto molded a German Ford Granada.Tomica had the generic police department Dodge Coronet and Toyota,Nissan police cars.Zee Toys had a Mazda 2-door police, but I do not know how realistic is that;plus Plymouth Fury,Chevy Camaro black and whites. Finally-and by all means, that is not all-Imperial Toys had a 1971 Chevrolet (I can determine the model;to be realistic it has to be a Bel-Air or Byscaine) and Chevy Blazers black and white;Matchbox also has modern vehicles such as the 2000 Impala,Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition.Zee Toys Molded a Ford Bronco in Black and white. Majorette has a small amount of european police cars. The list of non-realistic police cars is equally long..................

Dear Sirs:
The same thing will happen at all scales:the small manufacturers.
In 1/64,Hong Kong and Chinese offered a miriad of models that were junky, badly cast (it will fall apart) or are rip-offs from known manufacturers.
At times, things will work out differently.Since 1/64 has a lot of competition in the US,there were cases when a manufacturer,in order to keep in,did offered something different.Majorette was one of these: decided to get to the US in 1982,an year when many traditional companies were experimenting serious financial difficulties or going out of business all togheter. However, what kept the manufacturer afloat was its original series of cars.No fantasy vehicles and cars such as the Citroen Dyane,Peugeot 604 and even the large Jeep Gran Cherokee were not offered by no one and better yet, their cars were wonderfully made.Cars from the latter could be found at the stores until 1999;now only selected dealers carry these or eBay.They kept producing outstanding vehicles such as the 1948 Chevrolet pick-up and current (1990's) Alfa Romeo sedan, plus the French-sourced Toyota Yaris. Tomica,on the other hand, had quality models for sale-love the Dodge Coronet;Ironically, this is the only miniature from this car-Yatming's one does not count;it is a copy from it.However, how it charged $1.70 for their cars at the late 1970's and these were japanese,it was not sucessful. These can be got at eBay and selected dealers now.Again, their lineage was apart from the other manufacturers. Welly existed since the mid-1980's and their cars were copies from others.By 1997,however,their 'own' cars came to be,and now their GMC Yukon,1968 Chevelle SS396,Alfa Romeo spider (1990's) among others are unique to this scale. From the Chinese junk,an AMC matador police and fire vehicles are unique and until some time ago it was a 1964 GTO.Tootsetoys had a 1/64 line of cars at the end of the 1990's and molded a Cadillac STS and a two-door Ford Explorer. There are others-Playart,Zee Toys (now Motormax) and Yatming, and these kept alive because they also had a roster of different models.True, they also had tons of Mustangs and Corvettes;yet, besides these, there were the model that they were the only ones doing it.

Dear Sirs:
Large buses are mostly molded in 1/50.Very few made it in 1/64.What I can think is the Mercedes City bus from Schuco and MCI 'Greyhound' from Corgi Jr.EFE and OOC will be steady at 1/76 scale;Corgi offered theirs in 1/50.Some of the latter's AEC doubledeckers did graduated to 1/64,and they had an impressive amount of liveries. Some of the buses from Dinky did also graduated to this scale, and that is basically all.

Dear Sirs:
Ertl produces a multitude of farm equipment and its founder started business by molding toy tractors at its basement. There are companies that spinned-off from Ertl and their offerings were about the same. Racing Champions is associated with the latter, but the tractor division is still active.Besides the agricultural equipment, construction vehicles were molded as well, and the range was quite extensive. The miniature tractors were from Ford,John Deere and many others; construction equipment were Caterpillar based.Thing is,the company's production was very extensive;cars and trucks were also molded by this company.

Dear Sirs:
Playart products are being chased by the collectors just recently. It is the case when someone's products is undervalued until someone pays attention to it.They had a range of interesting vehicles in several scales, but their 1/64 range-which was sold at Woolworth's and Sears-is the one that is widely known.Vehicles included the 1977 Chevrolet Caprice,Volvo 343,Alfa P33,Dodge Van,Volvo Sedan,Volkswagen Bus,Mazda Cosmo and many more.Their cars were fairly well done and as is seen by the above list, the selection was quite good. They were avaliable from the early 1970's to the late 1980's,Vestiges from this manufacturers can be found as Model Power;some of the Playarts were marketed under the latter's name.At eBay,I saw someone paying $15.00 for the Volkswagen van-in its original carton. Yatming also had a very interesting line of 1/64 and one could find their cars under several different packagings.Their first line of cars were sold from the 1970's to the 1990's;then,their cars lost the 'Yatming' logo but they were still interesting, such as the circa 1994 Honda Civic sedan and the Toyota Corolla 2-door sedan,Volvo Wagon and many more.Opel Diplomat,1966 Chevrolet Chevelle,Dodge Coronet,Cadillac Sedan,Saab Sonnet,Dodge Monaco,Chevrolet Luv Pick-up were the samples of its first production. Now the Company concentrates with its bigger scales, and Hongwell provids it with a mervelous range of 1/72 vehicles;1/64 cars are items from the past, but one still can get some of these as sets.Thing is,their cars from the past are still relatively unknown and undervalued.
