Dear Sirs:
Hubley,or the Hubley Manufacturing co. made several types of toys and by 1966 was acquired by Gabriel Industries.By 1978,Gabriel was absorved by CBS (yes, the Columbia Broadcasting Co; I also have some of their toys).
Hubley's manufacturing facilities were located in Lancaster, Pensylvannia and existed since 1894,but by now is mostly a memory. Toys were manufactured by this company, but it also offered a good range of cars and trucks plus plastic promo vehicles ( quite difficult to find and these can go easily at the three-digit prices).
There was a range of 1/64 vehicles and these were called the Real Types and Tinytoys ( the latter was a commercial vehicle range) and that was a response from this manufacturer,at the 1950's, to the sucess of Dinky and Corgi. These vehicles debuted around 1961, and for the cars there was a Canadian and US version, and the former called its vehicles 'Real Toys' and there are variations between the Canadian versions, specially at the packaging and vehicle frame. The Canadian versions had a Rexdalle,Ontario adress.
Below, a list of the Tinytoys vehicles:
603K American La France pumper 604K Le Torneau-Westinghouse Haulpack Dump truck 605K Le Torneau-Westinghouse Tournatractor 606K Cook Brothers Cement truck. Only model I know from this Los Angeles Based truck manufacturer; I just got it. 615K American La France Aerial Ladder 616K Le Torneau-Westinghouse Tournapull Scraper 617K Chevrolet pick-up and Chris Craft Boat trailer 618K Chevrolet pick-up and Horse trailer
These models listed are very nice and quite detailed, with windscreens and interior details for the consruction equipment. Their size varies between 4 and 8 inches.
Below, the Real Toy and Real Types listings:
Real Toys Real Types RT 010 Dodge -- RT 020 Ford Fairlane -- RT 030 Ford Thunderbird 421 RT 040 Chrysler Imperial 423 RT 050 Studebaker Hawk 422 RT 060 Chevrolet Station Wagon -- RT 080 Chevrolet Corvette 420 RT 090 Buick 428 RT 150 Accident Squad Car -- RT 160 Police car 555 Ford State police RT 170 Station Wagon Fire Chief 553 Chevrolet Fire Chief RT 180 Taxi 554 Ford Taxi RT 190 Ambulance-Suburban 552 Chevrolet Ambulance RT 200 School Bus 756 RT 210 Metro Delivery 575 Delivery truck RT 230 Bread Delivery -- RT 240 T.C.A. Air Freight -- RT 250 Ford County Squire 427 RT 260 Ford Suburban Delivery 551 Ford Panel Truck RT 290 Coca Cola Truck 752 Soft Drink Truck RT 300 Dump Truck 754 RT 320 Chevrolet Fleetside truck 424 Chevrolet Pick-up RT 330 Ford Falcon 425 RT 340 Chevrolet Corvair 426 RT 350 GMC Firebird III 550 GM Fire Bird III -- 755 Chevrolet Truck
In all, these lists are based on packages desciptions. When the Real Toys and Real Types descriptions match, the Real Type list is left only with the reference number only. When these are different, the description is cited at both sides. -- stands for not avaliable at (either) range.
These vehicles are on the acceptable side in terms of detailing and many are one of a kind such as the school bus and Dump truc (both Chevy;1960's) 1958 Ford (police and taxi) and 4-door Chevrolet Corvair. All metal;no interiors. The differences between the Canadian and American types were cited; at times, however, some of the American versions have the 'modified' details of the Canadian Versions; and the Chevrolet Dump truck is noticeable different between the two versions ( Color, bumper details,etc.).
The CBS toys that I got are slot racers, such a 1976 Chevrolet Nova. CBS gave up their toy business a while ago.

Dear Sirs:
Brazil also had a range of diecast vehicles. One of the older will be Roly Toys and these were replicas of the DKW Wagon, the Volkswagen Van and the Alpine/Renault Interlagos. In theory, Jue,other of their diecast manufacturers did offered a VW Kombi in 1/64,but I never saw that. These would be a true Brazilian company; the Rei Collection offered copies of the Schuco Juniors and Sikus. It is also known that Matchbox were made in Brazil.

Dear Sirs:
Road Champs is today remebered by the series of police cars that it produces on an annual basis in 1/43 scale since 1993. In the past they were part of the JRI group and it seems that it involved Yatming and another 'generic' company- Ja-Ru ( the toys from the latter can still be found; at most,Yatming's knock-outs).
Road Champs also had a brief line of 1/64 vehicles and it was one of these cases when a new entry to the market offers something new. Most notable was the circa 1984 Chrysler Le Baron Convertible and circa 1983 Buick Riviera, also convertible. The problem with these cars were their execution: not that good at times. Later on, by the 'police car' period, some more cars were offered, such as an Honda coupe, Toyota Camper truck and MR2 along anothers. Another line of vehicles included a 'fix-up series ( one can take the vehicle apart) and this series included the 2000 Chevrolet Corvette and Ford f-150 Lightning.

Dear Sirs:
Racing Champions debuted in 1990 and intrduced a new trend in 1/64 collecting: manufacture of NASCAR vehicles. Mind you,the first models from this manufacturer just resembled a diecast blob; a bit later, there were enough details to tell if the model was a Pontiac,Chevrolet or Ford. Alas,Buick and Oldsmobile were modeled as well; these two makes quit racing at the very early 1990's. On an annual basis, the cars from NASCAR were reproduced and for a while, that was that.
In 1996, this manufacturer modeled regular car and trucks and detail on these were just amazing. That was the 'Mint' series, and the vehicles had opening panels and very accurate engine detail. Not only that, but there unique models such as Studebaker, Buick Gran National, Chevrolet 3100 pick up, 1961 and 1963 Chevrolet Impala,1950's Olds and Buick and more; it was a very nice, handsome series. Alas, the 1950 Chevrolet truck had a separate piece for the radiator and Air filter! Other series of real cars followed, and other nice pieces debuted: the 1953 Packard- a first for 1/64- and 1967 Plymouth Fury 4-door sedan, and a nice Duesenberg,a SJ, I believe. By then, Racing Champions would buy ERTL (1999 or so) and the nicest of all 1/64 cars debuted: the Muscle Car series. Be it a Chevy Nova,1962 Pontiac,1963 Galaxie,1971 Dodge Charger,Chrysler 300 D and others, this series had lots of detail, such as engine block collors, no screws or rivets at the chassi and detailed interiors. Some of these cars are the 'route 66' collection; some offerings are new castings.
The racing series proceeded an the UPS racer- #88- been reproduced by them. They also offered other recing series ( such as the 'world of outlaws' ) and many other related items. At the same token, their regular cars were also offered on a multitude of series, including this one that sold at Matchbox prices ( the Mint collection, less a ton of details was one of them in 1999). This is one of the large manufacturers now, and with ERTL, the array of offerings can be large and in all scales. Right now, the racers are their main offerings and Route 66 is the car series. ERTL still offers agricultural vehicles, trucks and some cars. By 2001 and 2002, some of the ERTL models such as the 'Dukes of Hazzard' ,'Hardcastle and McCormick' Coyote and the 'A-Team' GMC van were re-relesead. Further, there were several other series of other cars including this one which reproduced show cars. The first Crossfire at 1/64 was first made by them; Motormax offers it now. And basically, that is that. Not bad for a company which started with not so legible models of racers...........

Dear Sirs:
The early 1990's saw what one will call a NASCAR collecting binge; this is the period when Racing Champions appeared. There were others, such as ACTION and Racing Collectables. And the other manufacturers were offering racers as well. Action did not limited themselves to current racers; they also offered vintage ones such a 1962 Pontiac and 1964 Ford; Oldsmobile and Chevrolet racers from the 1970's were offered as well. Also, transpoters such as a Chevrolet and Ford Crew cab pick-ups that supposedly pushed a trailer with the racer ( a fifth wheel is molded at the bed). This series also offered racers in 1/24 scales and,as racing champions, it covered all faucets of NASCAR. Goes without saying that the current models-at the time Monte Carlo,Gran Prix and Thunderbird were avaliable and represented which driver were using these. Matchbox responded by offering a Thunderbird racer and there were replicas from the movie 'Days of Thunder'- either by Matchbox or generic chinese companies. Some other-smaller- manufacturers also did jump at the bandwagon and live to Zylmex to offer something interesting such as an Oldsmobile dragster- only one that is known,in fact.. Hot Wheels also have a special series for NASCAR, but the vehicles were not always correct for the driver represented. Lindberg had a brief affair with this subject, and came up with some unique Chrysler models on this process; Maisto went for the Taurus and Monte Carlo racers. The big surpise for 2001 was Chrysler's return at the races-as the Taurus, they would race a Dodge Intrepid. The first models of these were casted in China and were offerd as a cereal give-away. Racing Champions and the others acted accordingly, and now one can see a good amount of Intrepid racing car models. And of course, what one will call the 'generic junk'- just a car that was never intended to be a racer with a number and fancy graphics. Playing Mantis may be doing a right thing by dividing their cars in theme series. There is one problem, however: using the same model for different reasons (e.g., on the Police Series a 1974 Dodge Monaco is identified as a 1977, and there are some differences between the two). Accordingly, their biggest series was 'Muscle Cars Usa' and there were racing version as well of the circa 1984 Ford Thunderbird or circa 1970 Mercury Montego and at least, these had correct markings on them. Also, they had a Indy series that identified the year, the Pace Car from that period, and the Indy car which won that year. At first, these came on double-packs; (Indy racer winner and Pace Car). Accordingly,a unique miniature was offered: the modified Oldsmobile T-Top that was the Pace Car for 1977. On the Formula Racing, Yatming,Tomica,ERTL,Guiloy where prolific manufacturers of these vehicles,be it Brabham,Tyrell,Ford or witchever.Lately, these are reproduced as 'open wheel racers' (Maisto). Welly or Motormax did not offered any racing car that I know but I need to consult on that. Prior to the end of the 1990's, police cars were the 'hot item' to collect; yet, companies such as Racing Champions,ACTION are still quite active modeling NASCAR racers; the former recently molded a 1952 Plymouth racer that belonged to the famous #43. All in all, if someone is onto races, it has a good selection for the above mentioned and other manufacturers. Revell also ventured onto the diecast arena at this period, and at all, their racing car offerings were also on the extensive side; I mean, they also had a good selection of teams and drivers. It is some time now, but if I am not wrong, their offerings were from recent vehicles. Truck racers- light trucks, that is- debuted at the mid-1990's, and either Revell (and they still do) or Racing Champions had a good selection of these ( yes,you guys know me well- I would go for the Dodge Ram. The latter is offered as a racer by Hot Wheels as well, whereas the only model of its predecessor pick-up was just made as a slot racer). Well, that is basically all. See you at the races.

Dear Sirs:
As discussed on the movie section:
1. The Back to the Future De Lorean. Molded by Playing Mantis/Johnny Lightning on their Hollywood series. 2. The Ghostbusters Ambulance has a more interesting history in miniature. The first one was a give-away witch came with a roll of Fuji Film; Chinese Brand, around 1991 or so. The second one was molded by Playing Mantis on their 'Frightning' series.
3. Go Speed Racer: the Mach 5 was also molded by Playing Mantis. Along with that, one can get the Racer X car and the fastest car ( so fast that one would get in another dimension if would drive it without a special medication).
4.Starsky and Hutch: Corgi Jr. First and it appeared as regular Torino from Mattel of Brazil; and of course, Playing Mantis in their Hollywood series.
And I could go on.Later.

Dear Sirs:
On the subject of movie cars, Corgi and Playing Mantis/Johnny Lightning modeled several cars that starred at movies and/or tv shows.
Playing Mantis,James Bond series:
Dr No's Sunbeam Convertible,1957 Chevrolet Convertible Goldfinger Aston Martin and Ford Mustang You only Live twice Toyota 2000 convertible. As it was stated before, there wasn't a Toyota 2000 convertible. This car was made for this movie. On Her Majesty's Secret Service Mercury Cougar The Man with the Golden Gun AMC Coupe The Spy who loved me Lotus Esprit. It is a normal car. Moonraker Hispano-Suiza For your eyes only Lotus Esprit Living Daylights Aston Martin Licence to Kill Jeep CJ2 Goldeneye BMW Convertible The World is not Enough BMW Convertible Wrong cars: 1974 Dodge Monaco Police car from Live and Let Die. It should be a Chevrolet Cruiser. No Dodges appeared at this movie 1995 Chevrolet Caprice 'villain car' from 'Tomorrow never dies' It should be an Opel Sedan. Chevrolet Ambulance from Living Daylights. It was a Chevrolet, but different year.
Corgi had also a series of cars from James Bond movies. The Aston Martin, from Goldfinger. One presses a lever at the car's chassi and the roof opens and the seat goes up. I think that 1/64 figure came with that, too. The flying car from The Man with the Golden Gun. It is a generic vehicle with wings on it; on the movie, the car was an AMC Matador Coupe. The Lotus Esprit from The Spy who Loved Me. The car is molded in its 'submarine' shape. I do think that Corgi also molded the Aston Martin and Mercury Cougar from On Her Majesty Secret Service; Whizzwheels series. Corgi and Playing Mantis also did molded the Batmobile from the TV shows; ERTL and Hasbro offered the one from the movies. (ERTL: Batman and Batman 2; the others-3 and 4- were Hasbro Models). Playart also offered a Batmobile from the tv show. The Blue Brothers 1974 Dodge Monaco was originally offered by ERTL; and this is a very, very scarce item. Lucky me,then. Playing Mantis did also offered one and the circa 1990 Ford LTD Crown Victoria from Blue Brothers 2000. ERTL did offered a circa 1980's Maserati Quatroporte from, supposedly, the Rocky Movie series. The cars from TV shows are also well represented in 1/64.

Dear Sirs: The cars from tv shows are few and between: Dragnet's Ford Fairlane by Playing Mantis, Dodge Charger, Cadillac Convertible from Dukes of Hazzard,ERTL; GMC pick-up from the Fall Guy,ERTL; Coyote Sports car from Hardcastle and McCormick,ERTL; The A-Team GMC van; ERTL and is now offered by RCE.
Majorette had a set of vehicles that supposedly were used on Dallas (Jr et all) but I do not know if that was the right car. Likewise, the police cruiser for Dukes of Hazzard from ERTL is not right, either; it should be an AMC Matador, Monaco or Fury (yes,several-and beyond-were wrecked) not the 1980 Pontiac Bonneville which started life as the cruiser from Smokey and the Bandit II. It is true that when a show-or movie- are extremally popular, toy vehicles or models will follow. At times,is the right car,and on another times,is what the manufacturer has 'on house'. Hell, even Scooby-Doo's Mistery Machine was reproduced; RCE did the one from the movie, but, again, the model is not right.
Two cars from the show Man from UNCLE were produced: the Oldsmobile sedan from Playart ( and when these appear on eBay,heavy bidding follows) and Corgi Jr's ( futuristic? well, there was a special car done for this show) sports coupe. That I saw it sell for over a US$ 100.00 on eBay; when I got mine,I got lucky.Generally, heavy bidding follows when this car shows up.
I know that may be more, but up to now, that is everything I can remember. Jack promised to me,but he does not has the time right now: convert Yatming's Dodge Monaco to a T.J. Hooker cruiser or the blue that was driven by Hunter. (my painting is still not that good).
Hm. Tv show cars.....who gonna have thought..................

Dear Sirs:
1/64 scale also has a batch of antique cars to offer. Is not the 1886 Benz, but there are several from the 1900's,1910's and 1930's. Charbens from England also had a series of old cars and these are very difficult to find right now. The listing below are from their cars; these were released in 1958.
OC 1 1904 Darracq OC 2 1904 Spyker OC 4 1907 Ford Coupe OC 5 1907 Vauxhall OC 6 1906 De Dion Bouton OC 7 1898 Panhard OC 8 1906 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost OC 9 1903 Standard 6 CV Phaeton OC 10 1902 Wolseley Tonneau OC 11 1908 Packard Runabout OC 12 1905 Vauxhall Hansom Cab OC 16 1909 Albion Pick-up OC 17 1912 Rover Spider OC 18 1911 Mercedes-Benz OC 20 1910 Lanchester Torpedo OC 21 1922 Morris Cowley Spider OC 22 1900 Daimler OC 28 1913 Mercer Runabout
Lately, not many of these cars are being released due to the lack of interest from the collectors. I knew this show dealer- and that by 1998- that had a table full of these cars. I got some at very low prices and the many that were left he would give them to the kids if unable to sell them. Too bad I did not take them all. The cars were on several scales.
Corgi also has a version of the Morris Cowley; the same car was made in Brazil in plastic ( it was a promo from a beverage company) but in LHD; I also remember a 1914 Dodge from the same company. Zee Toys offered a 1914 Vauxhall; at its chassi, however, is written 1941. The Ford model T was offered by Tomica and it is a decent job; the van was offered by Tomica and Mattel. The offering of the latter is very modified as are all the Hot Wheels offerings. Mattel also molded decent models of the circa 1930's Auburn,Duesenberg and Cadillac ( as seen on Madam X movie). One of the latest releases from Matchbox was the circa 1920's Ford Van. Universal, the company who acquired Matchbox in 1982 also offered a late 1930's Chevrolet Coupe. Some of the Ingap's can pass at a 1/76 model; their Lancia is one of these. And I am sure that there is more...........

Dear Sirs:
These appeared around 2001 and are considered the smallest wireless remote control vehicles. Their scale is around 1/55 or 1/64,depending of the type of vehicle; the only problem with these is the cars are not based on real prototypes, yet Hummers are avaliable. At Toys R US, I already saw at least three manufacurers who offers this type of powered vehicles; one of these molded a line of NASCAR- and indeed, very detailed- vehicles. I been checking the Brazilian eBay (Mercado livre) and these are considered hot items in there; virtually all eBays are offering these at the moment and that is not surprise, since slot cars are also coming back and Playing Mantis are offering a series of cars that can fit on the older Aurora/Afx Chassis. In all, it seems that powered vehicles are hot items right now; give time, they may reproduce vehicles that we know.

Dear Sirs: These vehicles were released by 2002 and they are one of the few 1/64 kits avaliable,if one can classify this vehicles as such. The package contains the basic car and extra seats, tyres and wheels and different -darker- windows as well. I heard a comment that is not that easy to exchange these items, because the vehicle is only three inches long. I keep wondering. A 1/43 series is also avaliable and includes one of the few GMC Yukon Models available. The series is called the modifiers; the manufacturer calls itself Xconcepts. Its site appears below: www.modifierscars.com/contest/contest_final.htm The following cars were molded: 202018 1999 Honda Civic coupe si seats, wheels, tyres are exchangable;the same applies for all of these, except for the Cadillac and Ford F150 which offer an exchangable gear lever but not seats. 202028 2000 Acura Integra R 202038 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse gsx 202048 2000 Honda Accord Coupe ex 202058 2002 Cadillac Escalade 202068 2002 Ford F-150 xlt In all, these are well molded and also can be considered top of the line vehicles. A new series of car will debut soon, and there a series that offers the 1/43 and 1/64 model at the same package, including their new release: the Honda del Sol Coupe.

I saw what I believe was a Dodge Dart or a Plymouth Valiant sedan by Majorette for sale for $75 in a local hobby store.
Can you tell me more about this?
The seller also has a variety of very old Majorette models for sale, most in their original boxes (Talbot 180, Citroën SM, DS Ambulance, etc.) and a Dodge Diplomat copcar for $85. I don't know who made the Dodge, but it seems to have Majorette wheels.
I was gonna buy something to revive my childhood, but the prices were somewhat steep for me.

Dear Skunk: If the Dodge Dart/Valiant is similar to the one pictured below (the eBay piece) than this is a 1970 Plymouth Fury,# 216. Only miniature of the real car,and the model is very scarce. One was sold at eBay for $160.00; the price at that hobby store is the double as it should be,but either way, this car does not show very often-even at eBay. If the Dodge Diplomat that you saw is four inches long (or 1/43 scale) than this is the one that I was talking about and since I can not find it in any model listings, it may be a scarce item as well ( even tried eBay France and no luck). Thank you, Nick K cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3597618283&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

Dear Sirs:
It happened in 1/64 scale: there are more models avaliable than the real car!
The first case is about a Mercury- the Cougar. As the Thunderbird,it was intended to be a 2-door vehicle, but,as the Thunderbird, it got its four-door version by 1977,and unlike the T-bird,a station wagon version, also and all this in 1977 and it was the only year that these vehicles were produced. By then, the Mercury used the body of the new- by then- Ford LTD II. In the 25 years that I been in the US, I saw the real cars only once or twice. By 1978 or so, Matchbox number 74 was a model of the Mercury Cougar Villager Station Wagon and this is the case that there are more models than the real car. The model is somehow easy to spot.
The Majorette #216-the one that was discussed on the thread above- is the case when there is the only model of the real car,in this case the 1970 Plymouth Gran Fury ( always as a cop car). The model by itself is difficult to find, hence its price- on auction conditions or hobby places- can vary dramatically. Not only that, the model looks very right.
Motormax also has the only model of a real car: the circa 2003 Ford F150 crew cab pick-up. It is molded in 1/64 and 1/43 scales and both are very well done;the 1/64 version can go as low as .50 cents at some places but this particular item is also a pain to find.I got the little version at eBay.Replace the wheels and this will look right.
Motormax also molded the Toyota Tacoma pick-up,again,circa 2003 model. And,except for the racing version from Hot Wheels, this is the only model from this truck, which is a new design to the long running SR5 pick-up which, ironically, has very few models (Tomica,Majorette and a third party- stompers,I believe).
It seems that Motormax is doing this on purpouse,in order to compete at the very competitive 1/64 scale market from the US. They also are the only to offer the model of a Toyota Camri (fourth generation,I believe) and this item is even more difficult to find and i shows at eBay (not very often) expect competition. Also, they offer the new generation Corolla, but this one is easier to find.
On the case of the Lexus, the earlier LS version was offered by Zee Toys ( again,a scarce item) and Tomica ( as a rhd Toyota Celsior). At the same hand, the newer (redesigned) LS series is only offered by Tomica again as a rhd Toyota Celsior. The I series is offered by Jada Toys and Maisto and these are easier to find; the G series is offered by Jada Toys.
I will not bother with the Cadillac trucks;there are plenty of models of these.Maisto offers the only model of the late 1990's de Ville sedan,Jada Toys has the only model of the CTS,and Tootsetoys (yes,Tootsetoys) had a miniature of the popular STS ( not only model of it;Anson had an 1/18 scale version of it). Jada Toys also had a 1953 and 1962 Cadillac models but I am not sure if these are unique models.
I do not know much about Adam Brothers coupe, but Yat ming did molded a model of it in the 1980's. I can tell that,as a Bertone, that was an exclusive vehicle. Similary,Tomica had a model of an exclusive Japanese car- the Dome O. Matchbox also did manufactured a Carabo in the late 1960's.
The list can go on. Mattel also had its 'only' versions, such as the Dodge Aries (as a station Wagon),Ford Fairmont coupe ( as a racer),Dodge Mirada ( I did not saw one of these for years now) as a racer as well. On the late 1970's,GM offered a series of fastback sedans with Chevrolet,Buick,Pontiac and Oldsmobile badges. Mattel did picked the Olds version,as a racer.Again,I can not remember when I last saw one of these in the streets. The models themselves are not an everyday sight.
Norev and Majorette never bothered to mold 'imaginary' cars; hence, they filled a gap for the collectors who wanted french cars such as Peugeot,Talbot,Renault and Citroen.Alas, european Chryslers were also offered by Majorette and Mira of Spain. Also, from Majorette, one can get the Ligier coupe. To my surprise,Siku -yes,Siku - offered cars such as the circa 1964 Oldsmobile sedan,1958 or so Mercury Villager Wagon and Edsel (except for the late one, which was molded by RCE, these are also the only models for this cars). Also, Siku did came with DKW's,Goggomobiles and BMW Isettas, but these were modeled by others.
Tomica did offered only models of Japanese cars, but also did modeled the only SUV made by Lamborghini; again, only model of it. Also add the Toyota AA (the original Toyota car),Nissan President ( a large car with V8,for the Japanese market since the 1960's) and Toyota Century (same thing as the Nissan) Road Champs is known by their 1/43 scale series of police cars. They also fiddled with 1/64,and came with the only models of the Aries-based Chrysler Le Baron Convertible and 1980's Buick Riviera.
And by all means, that is not all. There a lot of unique models around. Some as easy, some are not that easy to find.
