The 540i's top speed is (voluntarily) limited to 155 by BMW. I don't know what the actual top speed would be. Do the cops keep the limiter, or do they let it run free?

Dear BillC:
Impressive data in there.I imagine that if Dodge will make a cruiser based on the Magnum (sedan) and that will be equipped with the Hemi engine, that will blow everybody's socks
If my memory do not fail, when tested by the Michigan State,Chrysler cruisers always left the others behind.
The Matador was not a slouch, either. To start with, only the police sedan was equipped with the 401 cu engine ( Amx,Javelins engine) and also had a low 14 second quarter mile.

Dear Sirs:
The Belvedere was considered a 4-door GTX because it actually chase its more sporty breathen such as the Charger, and so on................. I may be wrong, but I do not think that the hemi engine was police-spec engine, but that did not mean that the cops will not use it.Now Chrysler is back with a vengeance and has this engine avaliable again (but I do not think that is a 426).
New Jersey police also had the Ford LTD II's.

Checker made police cars from the mid 1960's through 1982.
In the early eighties many Boston suburbs used them. In the Town of Lynn, if you yelled "Hey Taxi" at a passing cop you'd be cited with a ticket for Obstruction of Justice.
I remember when my wife and I got our marriage certificate in Burlington, Mass in 1985, a Checker Cop car was parked in front of City Hall. Blue white doors and roof.
by the way we honeymoond in Cape May, NJ (see tread above)

The Chicago Police and Cook County Sheriff's Police also used Checkers back in the 1960s.

The Bavarian Autobahn police in Würburg has one BMW M3 sedan (E36). I recall it having the 3.2 litre engine, hence 321 hp. They use it for pursuit purposes on the (partially limited) Autobahn A7 around Würzburg. A white M3 with green markings and flashing blue lights makes for quite a sight!
It is fairly usual for the German federal states to purchase cars from the manufactuers which operate plants in that very state. This is why BMWs and Audis are almost exclusively used in Bavaria (plus BMWs in Hesse and Berlin now). Baden-Württemberg has an almost-all-Mercedes fleet; all the others drive mainly VW Passat wagons (most common cruiser today) and Opel Vectras.

Dear Marc:
Your comment of the Passat Wagon cruiser reminds me when the CHP (California Highway Patrol) had the Dodge ST. Regis fiasco in 1980 and was looking for a suitable cruiser. Several vehicles from the period were tested and a Plymouth Volare Wagon (mid-sized) gave almost good results. In the end,the CHP Ford Mustang was born.
My question is: does these Passat Wagons get involved on chases? Can these handle it? Or they are just urban patrol cars?

My question is: does these Passat Wagons get involved on chases? Can these handle it? Or they are just urban patrol cars? Stanhas87, Passat wagons (usually with the 130hp diesel engine at the moment) are used in urban and rural areas, and of course, they are doing the occasional car chase. The chassis surely can master driving at speed, and apparently, the power-to-weight ratio is sufficient for not letting to many a suspect escape. Top-speed is somewhere close to 125mhp - which you are not too likely to reach in towns, cities, or on B-roads. For Autobahn-patroling (and -chasing), my current home-state of North Rhine Westfalia has a fleet of Opel Omega 3.0 and 3.2 V6 sedans, both marked and unmarked. These are used exclusively on the Autobahn. Just to give a few examples of other German Autobahn-police cars that come to my mind: In Bavaria, that would be BMW 530i, 530d and a few 525d sedans and wagons or Audi A6 3.0 / 2.5 TDI wagons; Baden-Württemberg, Mercedes E 270 CDI sedans; Hesse, BMW 525d sedans; Berlin, BMW 525d wagons and Mercedes E 270 CDI wagons. I have the impression BMW offered excellent fleet leasing conditions for the outgoing E39 5-series. Again, off-Autobahn vehicles are mid-size cars such as Passat, Vectra, BMW 320d, Audi A4 1.9 TDI/130hp, Mercedes C220 CDI, or Ford Mondeo (Cologne only). Marc

Dear Marc:
Thank you for the input. At least there is a variety of Patrol cars in there. Here in the US is either the Ford Crown Victoria or the ocasional 2000 Chevrolet Impala or Chevrolet Tahoe. Most of the police agencies are going for the Vic lately.

I'm a little late to this game, but it seems that Volvo had a North American police car program that was scrapped when they were purchased by Ford (didn't want any internal competition to the Crowm Vic). Here in Ottawa, the RCMP has at least one 1999 S70, and i have seen another painted in the colours of the Laval police force. (Laval is a large community adjacent to Montreal.)
