I have a multi level clear plastic case about 24" long and 18" high that is used to display my better pieces. It came from a store counter cosmetic display that was no longer wanted. I understand that Mercedes has a multi deck circular parking structure in Germany that loads and unloads with a central elevator for storing their new vehicles. It would be interesting to make something like this out of clear plastic that would stand on the desk or bookcase. It should be mounted on a turntable with one section on the outerwall removeable for loading and unloading vehicles.

I have some of my models in a wall mounted display case with sliding doors. Unfortunately, most of the models are packed away in storage boxes.
I have thought about purchasing some plastic storage cases I have seen that have opening drawers. This would help having to search through the boxes for a particular model.
Since Vollmer, Busch, Faller, Walthers and SAI offer auto dealerships which can be used to display model cars, I have often thought wouldn't it be great if they offered a model (hopefully with plenty of glass areas) of an auto museum or a modern museum of transportation. A large model like this would make a perfect diorama subject and if it was large enough, could hold those "special models" of different eras and still be in context.

I have eight of those plastic wall-displays (the Herpa ones in my case), a multi-level glass cabinet and a table with a drawer and glass cover that hold a lot of the models I've collected, the rest (actually the greater part), is in boxes at the moment. Lee, Mercedes wasn't the first to use these tower-like buildings, Smart was the first I think. I've also seen towers from BMW, Saab, Landrover and even Kia (!). Mark, It is funny you should mention an auto-museum, I am actually planning a diorama that is going to be just that. I intend to use a glass case with a removable top (dims 85 x 20 x 20 cm) where the glass will also be the outer wall of the museum. The project is currently on hold though, I can't seem to find those ADP escalator kits anywhere

I like to display my models in what is called a three quarter view so both the front and one side can be seen. The best display that I have seen is a counter top foot square glass tower with multiple glass shelves.

As far as my wife (and my children) are agreeing , I have a room and a corridor where I display a part of my collection . For that I use some plastic wall mounted dispaly case from Wiking and Herpa (I have 6 of those) , and some woodden wall mounted display case (made by myself from « printer cases ») , I also use a wooden windowed case coming from a shop (Apotheke/chemistry) , or a full windowed 4 level case coming from a chemistry laboratory made (in the first half 20thcentury) to protect a « precision balance » . I’ve even « customized » for the good purpose some old windowed metallic biscuit cases for displaying a « food and bevarage » carriers vehicles theme (Sinalco, coca-cola, Martini, Biers, Migros, Joker, etc….) But 80% of the collection are in boxes …for my biggest unfortune !

I have been thinking about a desk top display about a foot in diameter and two feet tall. The base would be a turntable or lazy suzan. The outer shell would be a clear plastic tube or pipe. The inner column would be about three inches in diameter with a mirror finish, cut into sections for each level. The center would be a threaded rod much like used in a table lamp. The various levels could be 1/8 th inch thick plastic sheet either clear or solid. I figure you could get at least a dozen vehicles per level with about ten to twelve levels spacing each level at around two inchs. In other words it should be able to display between 120 to 144 vehicles. The vehicles could be held in place using a u shaped wheel chock glued to the floor and spaced inside the rear tires. It could even be motorized to revolve slowly. Input from anyone??

I like to display my models in layouts. Every month I change the cars. It means that I have to clean the models, keep them in their boxes, and choose new cars to show. Some years ago I began to build parkings in the layouts. More cars were showed and the cars in the parking where protected from the dust. Nevertheless I have much more cars now, and I would need a showcase to show them and a wall to place the showcas. ::)Now a lot of cars are in their boxes.

Hello I'm new to this nice messageboard, so this is my first reply; I prefer to collect my 1/87 vehicles sorted by prototype manufacturer. (Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, Peugeot, Opel, VW, etc. etc.) I have found Wiking's clear plastic storeage cases (ca. 15,5 by 21 cm. and 7 cm. high) very suitable. One such box can hold up from about 4-5 vehicles and up to more than 30 vehicles, depending on their size. The nice thing with these storeage trays is that you can stable them onto each other. It's easy to look for the vehicles because the boxes are clear platic. Another advantage is that it is easy to handle and move a large number of models. I have now almost 200 of these boxes, but I still need several hundreds of them... Best regards, Bjarte (H0collector)

Welcome Bjarte!
I, too, tend to sort my models by make, but I don't strictly adhere to that system anymore. It's just really troublesome to add new models to a showcase that's already sorted!

Thank you Christian, this is a wonderful site to meet other 1/87 vehicle enthusiasts I know what you mean about the trouble with filled boxes. Very often I must replace cars and move them to other boxes. In addition to sort the models after car make, I also sort them after prototype year. I also collect other type 1/87 vehicles by function/type (buses, taxis, trucks/lorries,vans, emergency (police, ambulance, fire), military vehicles, construction, farm equipment, racing cars etc.) in own boxes. So it is a never-ending process there I am in short for enough space (storage boxes) anytime. However I feel that this is some of the fun part by collecting 1/87 vehicles. And it is a very effective way to search for and find particular models in a large collection (counting several thousands).

My wife has a thing for antiques (she likes me, doesn't she?) so I found old type setting trays from the days when printing wasn't associated with computers, and fitted the front with plexi. It does well for passenger vehicles and small trucks but the 1 1/4" depth is too small for larger trucks , especially with West Coast mirrors. The compartments range from 2" to 4" in length and an 1 1/8" high. And my wife has another antique looking thing to dust.

Most of my models are in a series of clear plastic drawers, but I also have a 31.5-inch by 11.5-inch (800mm X 292mm) diorama of a used-car lot. It's called "Oddball's Autos" and can hold about 25 models.
