The Life-Like McDonalds recently posted at $100 went for $155.91 US$. Makes you wish you had a few dozen around to auction off. And, to think around 1985, I did not buy one at Woolco's (Woolworths discount store) for $3.99. Live and learn. have fun, Swamp Daddy

nice to see that oldie. As to Scale, a lot of Aurora was often 1/8" scale, or 1/96. Most were labeled and sold as HO (often not mentioning 1/87 or any proportion).
This "close is good enough" merchandising is quite common in all areas of models.
Another good example are all the "HO" slot cars by Aurora over the years and including the current ones made by Life-Like and sold by Walthers.
One of my main areas of interest is in building HO scale structures; and, quite often buildings, especially some from prominent European makers, are variable in scale. That is the first floor is scale and the upper floors are compressed. I have a wonderful multi-story building but the scale ruler shows the bottom floor is 10.5' and each of the 3 upper floors are about 6.5 feet each. Doesn't look too bad until it is placed next to a multi-story building of correct proportions.
Most structures are compressed (for real life) in width or depth so you can fit more in a give space; and, by that I don't mean the wrong scale but just smaller than most real buildings are.
But compression in height is noticeable.
Still, we all live with some compromises. With model vehicles distortions are even more apparent and (for me) hard to ignore. I have the Budgie Packard model which is compressed in length but not bad on width. I like Packards so I treasure this model; but, I very rarely have it on a diorama and never next to anything which will show the distortions.

Yes, that's exactly the reason I rarely buy things in Europe anymore, or bid on eBay items there.
Shipping is just too high and I think the gap will widen to where we see shipping up to 10X what an item might cost.
I have no answers, Swamp Daddy
