You like very much cars, trucks, bus ....as prototypes ? ;)You are film buff or like cinema? ....this thread is open to evoke some remarkable vehicles appearing as major scenery in some famous films ....whatever the difficulty sometimes to translate the titles from country to another, let's try to remember?.... Some scenery could provide very nice sceneries for diorama at HO scale: for lack of picture (for the moment) I will begin with: The Ford Mustang of J.L Trintignant at Deauville in « Un homme et une femme (a Man and a Woman) » (1966) from Claude Lelouch…. The Peugeot 403 cabriolet of Inspector Columbo (Peter Falk) in the famous TV serie (1968/78) The Ford Failane of the father in « Mon oncle (My uncle) » (1958) from Jacques Tati …many other 1950’s car in this film (…) The Willeme (same as the Dinky Super Toys model)of Jean Gabin in « Des gens sans importances » …french film from Henri Verneuil (1956)….in which there are many pictures of french lorries of this time (Willeme , Citroen ,Berliet, Panhard…) Aston Martin DBS of Brett Sinclair (Roger Moore), and Dino Ferrari of Daniel Wild (Tony Curtis) in the famous british TV « Amicalement votre (The persuaders) » Last film I saw was an excellent german film called « Good by Lenin » in where appears a Combi Trabant…one of the last models produced in the early 90’s just before Germany was unified … Very wide, hudge topic?...sure.... ;D

Hey, the two cars of the father in "Mon oncle" are a 1951 Oldsmobile (the grey one) and a 1956 Chevrolet Bel-Air (the green and pink and purple…"Alors, un p’tit supplément?…Allez, un p’tit filet rouge là…Oh, ça manque!" )
Interesting thread for me, let me see…I’ll be back! ;D

Really, very interesting thread for me as it’s mainly while looking at movies ( especially thrillers and "films noirs" ) that I have discovered these Americans cars I’m so keen about. I could tell you of the 1947 DeSoto business coupe in "Sunset Boulevard", of James Stewart 1956 DeSoto Coupe in "Vertigo" or of Steve McQueen Mustang fastback in "Bullitt" in 1968. But there are so many others.

Really off subject, but Sylvain,
What makes the Billy Wilder film so facinating is the cinamatography.....extremely modern for the time the movie was made.
I love the camera work done on the DeSoto with the two detectives inside...the way the camera pans in was very modern.
At the time most movies had flat background but in "Sunset Boulevard" the camera moves through the scene.
My favorite Movies is "Its a mad mad mad mad world". the 1962 Dodge Dart is a real star, the finned Plymouth chase taxis are fantastic.

I have though about making a diorama of various scenes from Mad Mad Mad Mad World.
Pretty much everything is available in 1/87 except the 1962 Dodge and Plymouth B-Body cars
The others exist or could be kitbashed
60's VW Conv. Wiking? 1962 Imperial Conv. Revell Helgan mod 1956 Ford COE Van Walthers/Magnason 1961 Chevy Impala hardtop, Mini Metal 1960 Willy Jeep Wagon EKO 1960's Dodge Powerwagon Rocco 1959 Plymouth Taxis modified EKO
The 62 Mopars will have to be built, maybe a project I should take on

Bond....James Bond-part one
In its twenty movies,a good variety of vehicles can be seen.
Doctor No: He Drives a Sunbeam,Rides a 1957 Chevy and a Vauxhall Sedan. A 1962 Chevrolet,Ford Anglia and that Funeral Car-a Packard,I think-can be seen.
From Russia with Love: He has a Bentley,as the original Bond novels. He also rides a Rolls Royce,Ford Wagon and the Chevy Flower truck. A Citroen traction Avant,GMC truck and a Chrysler taxi can be seen, along with Istanbul's Fire department's Vehicles.
Goldfinger: He drives an Aston Martin DB5,as 'Q' put it.He also rides a Ford Wagon and Pick-up. A Thunderbird,Lincoln Continental,Jeep Willys,International Loadstar,Dodge Power Wagon,'56 Ford Wagon,Rolls Royce,Ford Mustang can be seen.
Thunderball: He drives the Aston Martin and a Lincoln Continental;rides a Mustang and a Ford Wagon. A Triumph convertible,57 Ford,Mercedes-Benz Ambulance can be seen.Plus other types of land vehicles.
You only live twice: He rides the Toyota 2000 Convertible.Note:this car was specially made for this movie;the latter was never offered as a convertible. Also rides a Toyota Taxi and a Dodge Sedan. A Toyota sedan can be seen and Hong Kong's Police Land Rover 4-door.
On Her Majesty's Secret Service: He drives an Aston Martin, rides a Mercury Cougar,Rolls Royce Convertible. A Mercedes-Benz sedan, Volkswagen,Mini,Ford Escort (European) can be seen.
Diamonds are Forever: Drives a Ford Mustang and Ford LTD.Rides a Cadillac Funeral Car and a Ford Econoline Van. A Lotus,Mercedes Taxi,Plymouth Fury,Ford Thunderbird, and several police cars-Ford Torino,Custom- can be seen.Plus other type of (land) vehicles.
Live and Let Die: Drives a Mini Moke,Chevrolet Convertible and this AEC Double Decker Bus.Rides a Chevrolet Sedan (twice) plus a two door and a Checker Marathon. This old truck and a lot of Chevy Sedans from Lousiana State Police and Sheriff can be seen, along with these Chevy Nova Police Cars can be seen.
The Man with the Golden Gun: Drives an AMC Hornet (see note),rides this (British?) Taxi,MG,Mercedes-Benz RHD. A Land Rover 4-door (Hong Kong police),Hong Kong Taxi,,AMC Matador Coupe (it flies) and Matador Police can be seen.Details are given about Hong Kong's Peninsula Hotel Rolls Royces. Note: The Stunt at the wooden bridge (James Bond drives at the twisted structure, gets the car upside down and then rights itself up again) was originally done by AMC.The car would hit the ramp, get upside down, hit another ramp, and right itself up.Technically,in order to do that, the vehicle had to hit the ramp at an exact speed, otherwise it would not work. This stunt was done prior to the release of this movie (1974).
The Spy Who Loved Me: Drives the Lotus which goes underwater;rides an El Nasr (Egyptian Fiat) Van. A Volvo Semi,Mini Moke and a Bedford truck can be seen.Plus other land vehicles.
Moonraker: Rides a Lincoln Limo,Hispano-Suiza,Rolls Royce,Chevrolet Veraneio (Brazil) Ambulance. A host of Brazilian cars such as the Chevrolet Opala,Volkswagen 4-door,MP Lafer, and a locally-built Ford Galaxie can be seen plus AMC cars such as the Jeep and Concord Station Wagon,Chevy C series truck. Note: The 1965 Ford Galaxie was introduced in Brazil in 1967 and that bodyshell (along with severel modifications,i.e.,Mercury front grilles for instance) stay in production until the early 1980's.The one that appears at this movie has the Merc front grille. They were called either Galaxie or LTD,and,by the early 1970's,along with the Dodge Dart, these were the most luxurious brazilian cars (so to speak). They were slow sellers as well, and when the price of gas hit record prices, they were put to pasture.

To add to the slight French flavor of this thread:
Herpa's Peugeot 406 Touring Car would be fan-tas-tique for recreating the more recent flick "Taxi"... ;D
And... am I the only one who thought that the original "Italian Job" sucked? The cars were great, but I just couldn't stomach the plot...
I am always amused when the cars do not match the supposed setting of the film, be it temporal or geographical. I remember one (low-budget) sixties Swedish flick set on Mallorca, but it featured exclusively Swedish cars... Albert, were there a lot of Saab 2-strokes puttering around Mallorca in 1966? Didn't think so.

A not-so-good movie with Patrick Swazey called "Black Dog" had a variety of spectacular tractor trailer crashes a number of truck badges represented. What makes this so notable is that one sees so many of these vehicles' undersides. Which leads me right to "Convoy" and the "Rubber Ducky". I have to echo the mention of the Mustang in "Bullitt" for what is reputed to be the most exciting chase scene in movies (before the advent of computer generated stuff) with Gene Hackmans chase in "The French Connection" running a close second. (what was he driving?)

What makes the Billy Wilder film so facinating is the cinamatography But of course! I’m sorry to say, (but as it is an off topic thread I can tell it), but in all the movies I could tell you about, the movie comes first, and what make "Sunset boulevard" one of my favourites is really, but really not, the DeSoto. But to quote another Billy Wilder movie, "that’s another story". ;D

I am always amused when the cars do not match the supposed setting of the film I’m always amused by this also, especially with American movies with sets supposed to be in other countries… like France for instance… Really, any 2CV or DS19 available does not always do the trick! ;D And this problem occurs not only on low-budget movies. For instance, in "Catch me if you can", beside the fact that Quebec old town really not looks like a typical village of the south of France, two bright coloured 2 CV, a Fiat 500 and a Volvo PV 544 are really not the typical kind of car you would find parked on a small village market place in the 60’s.

Sylvain, I hadn't even noticed that myself. I did notice that it didn't look particularly French, I'm very happy to know where it was filmed. That PV544 did perplex me slightly...

I've been thinking about this diorama idea recently, as it happens. I have been watching the re-runs of M*A*S*H on TV and thought that it would be great to miniaturise the 4077 camp. Plenty of Roco Jeeps and Dodge ambulances. The choppers would be a bit of a problem, though.

Dear Alan:
Zylmax made a Bell chopper similar to the ones used in MASH.It approaches 1/87 scale.

Roco Minitanks also makes several nice choppers in 1/87 scale; Bell UH-1D, Bell AH-1G Cobra, Sikorsky CH-53 (like those used in Apollo spacecraft recoveries ?), plus some others. See also www.roco.com/usa1.htmlI don't know if any of these are similar to those in the M*A*S*H TV series ?
