Looking at Barnaba's concrete mixer reminded me that there are various shapes and sizes on pine plaques available in craft stores that work great for making a display base. You can just sand, stain and finish with a clear.
I like putting a "ground" on mine such as concrete, asphalt, or dirt. A little litter and weeds makes it really come alive.

I recently was viewing some 1/25 scale exotics (Ferrari etc.) one of the fellas used some clear acrylic bases that were just stunning. I have also seen some very nice mirrored bases that showed undercarriage details like those used in auto show competitions. I have some really nice Corian counter top material (imitation stone) that I use to display the stained glass creations done by my wife that I would like to use but would require just the right vehicle. If I were to use wood, I would prefer a nice hardwood. The nicest touch however would be an acrylic cover (like a box) over the model to protect as well as display.
