January-June U.S. retail toy sales were up 3% compared to the first half of 2006, according to The NPD Group, a sales tracking firm.
Vehicles were the hottest toy category, up 17%, followed by plush toys, up 9 percent; youth electronics, up 8 percent; arts and crafts, up 6 percent; infant/preschool, up 4 percent; building sets, up 4 percent; and games and puzzles, up 3 percent. Combined, those seven super-categories comprised over $4.5 billion in retail sales.
Sales in the doll category were flat in the first half, while those of action figures and of outdoor and sports toys both decreased 4 percent this year year-to-date through June.
NPD noted department stores/major chains, electronics/video and mass merchant/discount stores and online sellers all experienced dollar sales growth when it came to traditional toys.

Dear All:
Plus a factor which is making me go to circles so happy I am: Matchbox is the greatest seller from the Mattel group; sales experimented a growth of 34%; the obvious reason is that since 2005 Matchbox is the 'serious' (i.e., well done and real Vehicle modeler) manufacturer from that group. The 2004 'fiasco' will be soon just a memory.
