So I was supposed to be going from NY to Denver for the Christmas holiday. Of course, three hours before departure I find out that the flight is cancelled due to a huge snowstorm in the Rocky Mountains.
I was supposed to travel with my brother's Brazilian girlfriend Nara, who's never before seen any state besides NY, NJ and California. So we decided it was worth it to chance it and hop on a greyhound bus instead. A 44 hour-journey... Bad idea! In St.Louis we are told, with five minutes notice, to get off the bus. Due to the snowstorm all Denver-bound passengers must exit in St. Louis (900 miles east of Denver and any snow). Me and Nara and some Kansan dude we met sneak on the next bus to Kansas City where we rent a car instead. A nice one, a Mazda 6 V6 with a 6-spd automatic (that's a lot of 'sixes'). I have to drive all of the way (600 miles/960 km) in one go. Of course there is never any snow to speak of on the road, we reckon that Greyhound must have been watching Fox News. By now that I am back, we realized that we spent a total of 57 hours travelling in order to spend 64 hours at hour destination.
In any case, going that far on the Greyhound must be the worst travel experience of my life, even worse than Amtrakking it coast to coast. But I do have tons of stories now, and we managed to spend Christmas Eve together as planned.

Dear All:
In 1980 I went from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. Via Continental Trailways. To me,everything went smooth with no problems. At the return trip, the driver had brake problems near the Big Canyon in Arizona, but nothing really happened. On certain stops, the bus also carried parcels.
At the night,I would wonder how the driver feels by being the only awake at the Vehicle.
Had the opportunity to see half of the Continental United States.Went via Arizona,Texas,New Mexico,Oklahoma,Missouri (had a stop in Saint Louis),Maryland and finally my destination (there were more places,I just do not remember anymore). At the Capital,I saw the Library of Congress,Smithsonian Institute, toured the White House (but I did not saw Jimmy Carter) and the Zoo,which was run by the Smithsonian Institute.Did not road the Rapid Transit (Subway) because I did not knew that existed at that time, but I rode their Transit Authority towards my destinations.
On my way back, around the deserts of New Mexico, the driver was giving infos about the Countryside around us.I did liked Maryland's Countryside,by the way,but I did not cared much about Baltimore.
I want to go to New York via Amtrak.
In Saint Louis,I found a miniature of a Eagle Coach with Trailways markings, for a mere $5.00,around c.1/50 scale.

I remember having the opportunity to travel with my Father in his truck to several US air bases in Germany and the Netherlands during the early 1990's. The things that stick in my mind the most are the sights of all those drawbar trucks on the Autobahns, and the variety of vehicles that the USAF had as opposed to what they had in the UK. The last time I went, I remember this guy at Rhein-Main AB commenting on us in the UK getting all the new trucks, obviously having never seen a Seddon Atkinson 401. It was 8 years old!
