I recently saw a vintage auto race on the television. During the race a Ginetta G20 closed cab, was performing remarkably well. It prompted me to learn more about them. I was very impressed with the design of the G33 in particular. Any comments on these vehicles and what if any may be available in 1:87

Ah! English garage manufacturers. It doesn't exactly surprise me to see the Ginetta name mentioned knowing what kind of people post here, but it's quite an unusual topic. As for 1/87 scale models, there are none. Autosculpt makes a G15, but that is probably 1/100 or so.

I was lucky enough to see a G20 racing once, I must have pictures of it somewhere...... While I am trying to find the pictures you may want to have a look here: www.ginettacars.com/

Hmmmm.. I'll have to ponder that Christian before I know how to take it. And thanks for the link Eric, I was there and did the math on the cost of getting a G33 in my driveway. Actually, not bad, but what do I do for service work? Will be looking for something to convert.

As a proud Swede, I have to mention that Ginettas were briefly built in Sweden (Uddevalla) with Volvo 960 engines. I talked to the owner of a G4 (the best looking Ginetta I think) not too long ago, and he said that they largely rely on fairly simple and unexotic mechanics. Certainly not an everyday car, but for the mildly handy and interested person... You may know that brothers Bob, Trevers, Ivor, and Douglas Walklett founded the company, but whence the name? According to the Walklett brothers, they made it up, thinking it sounded "fast" and "exotic"... ;D

Ginetta

Surprised to find about Ginettas built elsewhere. The only model I am aware of was made by SAMS in 1/43 some time ago here in the UK. Available as white metal model or built and fairly basic given the price. Earlier Ginettas used Hillman Imp running gear and were rear wheel drive. They were often kit cars - in UK you could avoid Car Tax at one time if you assembled the car yourself. There were lots of other small scale 'kit car' makers such as Gilbern and Davrian which have never been modelled. Of course the Lotus 7 and Lotus Elan were also available as Kits too. Towards the end of Ginetta's life I seem to remember a larger and less sporty car using a Ford Cortina engine. Perhaps this was the car aslo available oversees with different engines.
