Looking at the calendar, only two months to go before the 2012 Toy Fair. Anyone have any inside information on what to expect?

Mark,
I don't have inside info, but I wouldn't expect much, as has been the case the last few years. The hobby has really shrunk for me personally in the 4.5 years that I've been on this forum. Alarming to say the least. There are a few positive signs out there, but I repeat, few. Neo comes to mind as well as RPS. Trucks N' Stuff/TON is coming on strong and some day cabs have just been released. I'm going to buy as many as I can because I've been wanting these for a looong time!
I had seen some new VW Passats from Wiking, are these 2010, 2011, or 2012 models? Anybody know? I'm sure the price will be steep too. If they are priced under 30.00 I'll be in for a few.
There might be a few surprises here and there, but I'm not expecting much in the way of exciting news.

Vito, Wiking's newly released Passat is the one that debuted in October 2010, so I am guessing 2011 model year. It is however the European version of the car. The American one with somewhat different bodywork is not available in 1/87. As for Toy Fair I am not expecting many surprises either. There are still a lot of Eastern European agricultural implements that Busch can model. Sarcasm aside, for those of you who are primarily focused on American prototypes it will probably be a pretty barren scenario again. Also, what we see at the show might even be more influenced by the ongoing crisis than we realize now. I am not entirely pessimistic though. What I would like to do this time is to read Marc Schmidt's report in February without knowing what to expect. I really don't like how the manufacturers handle their announcements now, i.e. giving us little bits and pieces all over January. Where's the excitement in that?

What will be interesting in 2012 is whether Schuco / Welly / Highspeed / Vollmer, etc. will merely reproduce existing Herpa, Wiking and Busch models in less detail and more cheaply or whether they will fill in the gaps appearing in the Herpa / Wiking /Busch model ranges, such as the 2011 BMW 1 series, Mercedes C Class Coupe and Mercedes CLS.
A few years ago, the release of the BMW 3 series in 1:87 scale would not even have been in doubt, whereas earlier this month, it was with great relief that I noted that Herpa is to release the new 3 series.
I think that there is a very strong likelihood that we will see the 2012 Audi A3 (3 door), 2012 Mercedes A Class and Golf VII in 1:87 scale. In addition, Busch may release the new GL class 4WD in 2012.
Beyond that, however, I do not see much scope for any more modern vehicles in 1:87 this year.
What I would really like to see is Neo venture into producing some very up-to-date 1:87 models of interesting prototypes such as the Range Rover Evoque or Jaguar XJ. I am sure that many of us on this forum would be willing to pay a premium for high quality models of modern vehicles from Neo.

Range Rover Evoque or Jaguar XJ...now those would be nice!
Schuco and Welly have produced some nice models over the past couple of years and I agree, it would be nice if they could do something different from the main manufacturers. I absolutely was delighted when I saw the Alfa Romeo Spiders from them as well as the 156, Land Rovers and numerous other models.
Are the Neo models selected because they are old enough to not require licensing in the EU? That may preclude modern Honda and other contemporary vehicles. If that is so, it is too bad but they have done a great job so far producing models that are desirable.
My personal favorite company right now is Spark and I can't wait to see what they will announce at the Fair. I've seen some sites show an Advance Reservation for the 1/43 versions of Lotus prototypes shown at Paris in 2010. I hope these are reproduced in 1/87. The Bentleys and Aston Martins are fantastic models. Even Spark has produced models already done (Cobra). Now if they could get their Ferrari license back....Ferrari 458 Italia and the FF.
Some of the big manufacturers like Wiking are taking some chances. The Glas and Escort were welcome but another Mustang? While an improvement over the Busch offering, I would have preferred the fastback version or a 1971 version or even the Mustang II of the mid-70's. Nonetheless, in this economy, I'm happy for anything new from Herpa or Wiking. How about a Triumph TR-7 and Chevrolet Vega or Corvair for 2012?
Anyway, I am hopeful that we will start to see a rebound in hobby.

For Wiking a Mustang II wouldn't make sense, as no one in Germany knows that model. Same goes for the Vega. The fastback however would have been a great model.

Yes, that is why I understand Wiking doing a '65 Mustang since they had a presence in Europe in the 1960's.
I don't hold out much hope for a Mustang II or Chevy Vega being made but I think the Corvair would be a great Brekina model.
I forgot to mention Brekina in my past post. They certainly seem to be one of the few manufacturers coming out with a lot of new models, particularly those that would interest North American collectors. They will be one of the manufacturers that I will look with interest to see their releases for 2012.

Not just for the American market Mark. Also for the Swedish, Britisch, Italian and Dutch market.
And at Makette it's always "Nürnberg"

Christian,
Thanks for the response about the new Passat although it looks very close to the American version to me. Maybe I'm missing something, but it's close enough to buy. Now, let's hope that Wiking does not raise the price past 35.00, which would be too much. At least it should be available through Walthers.
Speaking of Walthers, if Neo allows their products to be sold through them it would be huge for me because I would save on shipping costs. That would be big news from the Toy Fair! A couple of late model Hondas wouldn't be too bad either!
Also, I hope Ricko is still in the game because their products are tremendous and great value compared to other manufacturers. Once again, I don't have to ask for American vehicles only; how about some Subarus, Volvos, Jaguars, and Saabs from the 1995-2010 period?

Mark,
As a follow on to your note on the 19th, based on a Mo87 report today, Brekina will introduce even more exciting models at the Fair. My favorite out of the bunch is the mid-'70s era Toyota Celica GT
Very exciting...and, worth the very long wait for this prototype in HO scale!

The Celica is going to be a great model, as is the Jaguar XJ6. Brekina continues to produce unexpected (but welcome) models. I downloaded a Brekina Messe brochure and as was mentioned above, the BMW's and Peugeot 203 are also very welcome models.
