If anyone lives in the (huge, mega) greater metropolitan area of L.A. (I am talking of Santa Barbara down to San Diego, LOL) or visiting, they should take their kids to Gullwings Childrens Museum. There was a free admission event the other day, and I took my two children there (I am in Camarillo, California this week visiting in-laws). There was a very well-done HO diorama of the nearby Port Hueneme (prounounced 'why knee me') a military/commercial deep-water port. There was also a train diorama, but the cars were the generic railroad HO scale Walthers-type cars. The port diorama was also HO scale, but used mostly Schuco/Model Power/High-Speed/Reel Rides with a few Herpas thrown in. Port Hueneme is the regional distribution port for Mazda, Mini, BMW, Jaguar, so mostly BMW and Mini were displayed in the diorama. There was also a BMW utilizing the Faller system which kids could push a switch and it drove around the offload area of the port. The back part of the port was made in 1/160 scale to provide depth. I took multiple photos of the diorama, but need to figure out how to attach them here, or I'll put them in my photobucket account. If allowed, I will submit photos to the 1/87 vehicle club.
OK, not the most exciting find, but it was unexpected nonetheless, and the diorama was done well. So it does go to show that you can expect the unexpected.
If csfesmire's and friends recent push to have (proper)1/87 scale cars displayed on train layouts, we might have some very interesting train dioramas coming out in the near future. Let's hope it continues, and keep up the good work, Chester!!!
