This CAT is called a Scaper pan. You can drop the center portion down and scrape soil into the bowl. You then drive it to your location and there is a big plate in the rear of the bowl, and you push the soil back out. Generally you scape it off and put if back down in one foot thick layers. You use one of there if you do not want to use an excavator fill a dump truck, and then drive and dump the dump truck. This particular scaper is a push pull scraper, as it has two motors, one in the front (pulling) and one in the back (Pushing). some only have a front motor. and if you need extra help you get a dozer behind to push it through

All of the above is quite accurate. You will find these being used primarily in road building operations. There were several in operation recently in the widening project on the Maine Turnpike.

Road building or any large scale earthwork project. I spend lots of time for my job (Civil Engineering) around the pittsburgh Pennsylvania region playing out in the dirt where they are using this sort of heavy equipment. I have seen them used on small housing plans 15-20 house up to 1,000 acre sites where they are building enormous industrial parks malls ect. Basicly if you want to see one in action, road projects or any big land development project will have them. I will have to look through my pictures and see if I can find some good ones to post.
