Dear Sirs: I am also aware that Hino (now part of Toyota) is the second major bus manufacturer in Japan. Models exist, but most on 1/110 or smaller scale. There are a range - ASC - which model these around 1/90 and the rear door even slides; diecast. A part of their site: www.hino.co.jp/j/product/bus/selega_r/index.html

Dear Sirs:
Hyundai is known by its line of economy cars but they also produce all kinds of vehicles and buses are part of their line-up. Models in carboard of their buses do exist.

Dear Sirs: New and improved - so to speak. The LACMTA buses that run on routes 20 or 720 (Neoplan 6000 series for the former or NABI for the latter) have a new feature: a recorded voice tells were the next stop is located. Hence, when the bus is full, one does not need anymore to try to peek uselessly out in order to find out where he/her are at. At first,a voice stated 'Stop Requested' (started around last year) and now this. Below, the new NABI series (8000 series) that is used at the LACMTA's Rapid Routes: www.nabiusa.com/buses/view_image.cfm?bus_id=12 As one can see, buses did came a long way too.

Hm, the buses I rode to school on in 1st grade did that. I guess us irritatingly wholesome Swedes tend to spend a bit more on public transportation... Dear Skunk: I assure you that recorded anything on public buses from LACMTA started 2004 (stop requested issue) and this location issue is from this year; perhaps present when the NABI 8000 series were introduced (also on 2004). Before that, buses had these extra pair of windows above the normal ones so one could peek out when a crowd was present and have some ideia where he/she is. As a further note, the most advanced mass transit systems are from TTC (Toronto Transit Comission) and most European systems. As far as the late 1980's,TTC had computers at their buses monitoring passenger activities so the Authority could tell how frequently such and such route could ran. European systems are also ahead of the ones from the US; so are the ones from Japan. After all, passenger density on this systems are a reality. Some thing on Latin America but they can not afford technology to monitor their activities;in Africa shared taxis are by far more popular and riden than buses. Chances are that any new feature on mass transit systems will come from Europe when it was used first. Nick K

Dear Sirs:
Yesterday I managed to get EKO's Chausson bus (for Jack, really). One of the things that I know about of this vehicle is it was not manufactured for a very long while but was considered a very modern item for its time (the 1960's). Some of these ran at the streets of Egypt and Poland and one of them has or had active duty in Madagascar as of this Century. This vehicle does not have double rear wheels. The company was in business from 1947 to 1963 and is a French make that was absorved by the Saviem group in 1960. The bus molded by EKO was introduced in 1957. Besides Cairo and Poland, the buses saw services in Copenhagen,,Luxemburg,Casablanca,Budapest,Sofia,Istanbul.Jerusalem and Djeddah. The 1957 version was designed for Paris, actually. Saviem produced this bus several years after Chausson make was discontinued.

a recorded voice tells were the next stop is located. Hem… Most Parisian buses do that from quite sometime now, and if they do not, at least, they are equipped with screen indicating what the next stop will be, and when the terminus of the line will be reached. Also in more and more bus stop, screens indicating when the next bus is due. Both late devices are fine, but rather annoying when buses are trapped in traffic jams. You do not only have the feeling that you’re waiting too long, these screens show you are: 5mn, 10mn, 15mn… But that should not happen anymore for the main bus lines: Paris is converting most of its large boulevards and avenues, building real bus tracks on the middle of them, lined by sidewalks, forbidden to personal cars and trucks. Ecologists are pleased, but car-drivers furious. Next step? Streetcars again!

Ecologists are pleased, but car-drivers furious. Next step? Streetcars again! Dear Sylvain: Since late 2003 LACMTA (Los Andeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority) is building the Orange Line which connects Burbank to Canoga Park and is also located a block from my apartment. Basicaly,is an exclusive bus line located on a former freight rail line. No cars will be allowed on this route. Busways do exist too,but cars share the road with the buses. On certain systems in Europe, there is an exclusive way for the buses, but these run on a track as a train, but the latter is not located in the floor, but at the sides of the bus so no one can run along these vehicles. In theory, the buses will comute faster than regular traffic. Streetcars are known as LRV's now and are experimenting a rebirth globally. Los Angeles has two LRV routes at the moment and these were introduced by the late 1990's. Up to the late 1950's,this town had an extensive streetcar network which was dismantled and by the next three decades SCRTD would be running buses only at the streets of this metropolis but as the 1990's downed, other transportation modes became avaliable.

Dear Sirs:
As the Orange Line in Los Angeles nears completion (it an exclusive bus line that runs where a rail line used to be) one will ride on NABI's artic buses at this route.
Is interesting to notice that Los Angeles former SCRTD had MAN artic buses that were sent as a kit to the US and assembled by AMG (American Motors General and yes the same company who built the Hummer). Drivers did not particulary liked these vehicles and these had their fair amount of 'bumping'.
On another note, the newspaper Daily News had their doubts about the Orange Line. The train track was single and thy were wondering ho two buses would fit side by side in there. I have my doubts myself. As it goes,a LRV route was originally proposed, but a fair amount of Homeowners were opposed to the ideia; when the bus deal was approved, they wanted also to block it. Only time will tell what may happen. The line is supposed to be operational this year; project started in mid-2002.

Dear Sirs: On my 'constant' navigations on the Internet,I managed to find a site that has photos of Buses which runs at Argentinian roads and Highways. See below: www.solobus.com.ar/frame_all.htm The bus manufacturers are under Carrocerias A to Z; they also list the bus Companies and there one find the photos of Argentinian Buses running in the USA. Some of these, such as the Cametal, managed to hit far-flung places such as Florida,USA. Also notice the list includes GM Highway buses from the 1940's and UK's Duplex versions; Brazilian products such as Marcopolo is also represented. Granted, some photos are fuzzy, but is better than nothing. Most of the buses listed below do not appear at Nick Georgano's Encyclopedia of Commercial Vehicles and some of these, such as the Cametal, were molded in miniature by Galgo, the Argentinian Manufacturer albeit not in 1/87 scale. Galgo also offers Mercedes Benz buses mounted on truck Chassi with liveries of the Private Carrirers wich plows Buenos Aires streets.

Only time will tell what may happen. The line is supposed to be operational this year; project started in mid-2002. Dear Sirs: This route will start to run on October 29th,2005. LACMTA states that this is a bus which runs as a train (the bus stops are covered -and built as - a train platform;there are ticket-dispensing machines and graphs which state when the next bus will be by). LACMTA also claims that most Transit Authorities in the world are paying attention to this route, which runs from North Hollywood to Warner Center (Northern end of Los Angeles). This route runs on a former rail freight line which ended in Burbank (seven to ten miles from North Hollywood) and ended in Canoga, which is located five miles north of Warner Center. The Burbank-New Hollywood stretch was converted to be a pedestrian walkaway. The buses are sixty-foot artic NABIs. As of now,the route is being tested,so I can see the buses going by.I live within two blocks from this busway, and, when I came to Van Nuys in 1979,I would see with pleasure the freight train that ran at this route. The trains ceased to operate around 1992;ten years later, this LACMTA route began to be built.

Dear Sirs:
When I saw the movie Total Recalll I noticed that the subway cars in there were equipped with news-transmiting TV's. Now,some of the Metro buses got a flat screen which does the same thing. commercials added, courtesy of Transit TV. Hm.Will be interesting to add this feature to the interior of a model bus.
The screens are located at the front, right side and faces the seat behind the rear door.
