I agree that the Defender would be an iconic model for Masterpiece to produce. I was fortunate to obtain some of the Grinwis Landrover Defender 110 LWB, Landrover 110 HCPU and Landrover 130 Double Cab kits. I found that the Roco 109 LWB glass unit and chassis fit the Grinwis kit perfectly and the use of BS Design wheels from their out-of-scale Freelander kit produces a nice Defender LWB Station Wagon.
If Masterpiece were to pursue the SUV model route, there are a limited number of SUV's which are found in both the US and European markets. These fall into the following categories (of models not already available in 1:87):
- North American models such as the Jeep range, Dodge Nitro, Cadillac SRX and Hummer H3.
- Softroaders such as the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX7, Honda CRX, Jeep Compass, Freelander II, Nissan Rogue /Qasqhai, Murano etc; and
- real offroad SUV's, being limited to the Range Rover, Toyota Landcruiser LC100 and Nissan Pathfinder
It is hoped that the close assoiciation with Chrysler will result in Masterpiece bringing vehicles such as the Nitro and 2008 Cherokee to fruition. I fear, however, that the Hummer H3 and Cadillac SRX do not meet the GM minimum size standards.
I recall BillC (with his Ricko hat on) stating that a while ago, Nissan USA were keen to do something in 1:87, and the Rogue, Murano and Pathfinder may be good potential sellers in both the US and the crucial German market.
Personally, I would love to see the new 2008 Toyota Landcruiser SUV in 1:87 from Masterpiece as the current version of that model is the large SUV of choice in Africa, the Middle East and Australia.

Dear All:
As I said, whichever will gonna make it, is fine by me - another Chrysler Co. model, yeah!! However, if the choice is the Magnum,Polara 1969 or Diplomat, the Local Authorities may find my lifeless body staring at the screen of my terminal with an ear to ear smile!!!

Dear jeffh,
I believe that Nissan Rogue and Qashqai are different models. They don't have much in common. The Qashqai is more a competitor to the Cross models of the VW Golf in Germany and other compacts. The Rogue looks much larger to me. Nevertheless, especially the Qashqai is nice :-)

Dodge Nitro: Nobody's interested. Journey's a possibility because it's new. Jeep Cherokee: There was a deal, but it fell through. For reasons I can't discuss, it's unlikely to be picked up again. Sadly, the same deal included the Patriot. Cadillac SRX: Nope. Hummer H-anything: Nope. H1 is being discontinued, H2 is dropping fast and H3 isn't long enough to meet the size requirements. Land Rover: Kind of in limbo right now because Ford may unload it. Hate to put big bucks into tooling and find the license is no good. Has happened before. Nissan: A lot will depend on Nissan. Toyota: Busch can make models of the older Land Cruisers because of a unique provision of German law. Neither Ricko nor Masterpiece can take advantage of that, so they're stuck with trying to beat down the walls of Fort Toyota.

BIll,
Is it possible to make/license the Jeep Cherokee through the Beijing Jeep Corporation? Other than being right-hand-drive, the BJ7202-BJ7250/Super Cherokee is the same as the American/European version.
I always wondered why there were so few models of the Jeep XJ-Cherokee?
Richard O. (or was this the bad deal)

Considering all this, I find it amazing that we get any models at all. ( )

And why not a Corean like the Hyundai Santa Fe? Difficult to get licenses from that country?

Korea seems to be a great big blank spot when it comes to models of any sort - the only ones I can think of are the awful Kingstars in circa 1:32 scale.
Sounds like Busch is going to be my best bet in hoping for a Toyota pickup?

Dear Bill:
Any word about the Diplmat? Is it been considered?

Dear All:
There are plenty of Jeep models, but these are not HO. As I said before, Matchbox has a wide array of their miniatures. Sorry to hear that to model them in 1/87 is so difficult.
No love for the Dodge Nitro here.I also heard that Toyota is a pain to grant models.

It seems like Chrysler couldn't wait to grant a license for the Dodge Caliber from Ricko and 2007 Jeep Wrangler from Masterpiece. All of the sudden, they are giving problems for the Patriot and Cherokee? OK, then I can hope for the Compass and Commander from Masterpiece.
I can't see Masterpiece making only 1 modern Jeep product and then stopping there. After the excellent Wrangler which is arriving soon I hope to see more products from Jeep. I do suspect there is another modern Dodge coming soon!

No. It's my understanding that when licensing first became popular, Chrysler put a huge royalty on Jeep replicas. Chrysler also acquired a reputation as being very difficult to work with. As a result, most smaller modelmakers (like all the ones we know, including Busch, Athearn and Atlas) have simply avoided dealing with them. In my experience, Chrysler is now no more difficult to work with than Ford I am sorry but I cannot discuss any details of this at all. Suffice it to say that all the vehicles involved are currently dead issues.

Date : 11th September 2007 On behalf of Ricko Limited, we would like to clarify the information provided are false information. The person who mentioned in the quoted message has been fired by Ricko Limited in last August due to his poor management in the company. Ricko has been without any relationship with the captioned person and company since last September. Ricko skills has never been transfered to the others. Ricko is not using the tool marker which is claimed to be produced for Masterpiece. We are now seeking for legal advice and we reserve our rights to take legal action to those who published the false and incorrect information. On behalf of Ricko Limited, Frankie Ng[/size] As promised in another thread, here is the story behind Masterpiece. While I can't discuss all the circumstances, Masterpiece was founded last September by the man who created most of Ricko's best models, working in partnership with the company that did the tooling for the Ricko models like the 1931 Lincoln Model K, Mercedes 770V and Dodge Charger Police. In other words, most of Ricko's skill is now at Masterpiece. Basically, Masterpiece went from zero to showing production-ready models in five months. The first production models, the initial Austro Daimler releases, should ship in April. According to the current schedule, the first American models should ship in late May. These will be the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon (the one with the 32-inch tires) and the 1936 Chrysler C-10 Airflow Imperial Eight sedan. Currently a dozen models are in various states of development.

Keep on offering interesting models, and we will keep buying. And thank you for bringing some fresh air and many much desired models to the 87th scale market. And since you visit our board, any word on those skinny little tires with which you saddle your otherwise so lovely models?
