Let me detail here the new project that I have decided to develop here. Let's call it: From 'inside out' to 'skin only' to 'outside in' What means 'inside out' ? I started modelling with the 'inside out' philosophy in mind. First take some materials, build up the inside, and then carve the outside. Some photos can be found in this forum More photos can be found on my websites, even if many of them are now offline. I really had fun writing this article for the website in ... www.87thscale.info/building_a_formula_1_car.htm

'skin only' phase... And then around 2004, mainly because of my boy, I had to change my philosophy, because... he is forgiven... he enjoyed destroying my collection... one at a time. I switched to a complete new philosophy... paper modelling. Creation of a skin. No inside, no outside. Just a skin. And I created dozens, hundreds, even maybe thousands of models, who knows? Who cares? 87th scale, 64th scale, houses, cars, landscapes... Metasequoia, Pepakura, and PDF995 softwares see teamaoc.webs.com/ or here for my latest 87th scale paper diorama: www.maquettes-papier.net/forumenpapier/topic13673.html

Now, in 2015.. I am pushing to change again. Let's call it: From 'inside out' to 'outside in'
Since 1991 when I started modelling, the society has changed a lot. The new technology enables up to produce everything, and anything you want. Now there is virtual reality, 3D printing, CAO... everywhere, except in my workshop.
However, I do love the plaster, or more exactly dental stone, this yellow powder dentists use to cast your teeth. It has its own signature, touch and feel that I like very much. Not to mention it's safe for kids.
So?

The idea is to use the new technology to create a 'moulding box' (or should I say 'casting box'?) in which I could pour dental stone and cast a model. Let's go.

For the last few days I have posted messages on Facebook and contacted people. (Welcome to read the previous messages if you are one of them)
The idea is to use 3D softwares and 3D printing to make a 'casting' box. A box made of 4 pieces to be assembled together like a 3D puzzle with an opening and a reservoir for pouring the dental stone with a lid even for shaking the mixture without spilling everywhere

In terms of size...
A scale 1 racing car is about... 5 m. long, 2 m. wide and 1.5 m high so a scale 87 model should be... 5,7 cm long, 2,3 cm wide, and 1,8 cm high so the casting box is about... (add 1 good cm and reservoir)... 10 cm long, 3 cm wide, and 2,5 cm high.

The concept is to use 3D Printing to create a new mold to fit into this Shaker Maker
The file has to be .STL
Since I don't have many options and softwares available, the main suggestion is to use SketchUp and then STL extension.

First goal: create a generic shape of a modern Le Mans car such as an Audi R18, Porsche 919, Toyota TS040, and so on...
to be continued on page 2... yes, yes, there a page 2... find it out!
