Tony,
no particular reason, but I think that an American or Asian prototype is less likely. And among the Europeans you would need a healthy make that is able to invest this kind of money (I do believe it will be a promotional model). I might be wide off the mark with this reasoning, though. The Rietze Suzukis came out of nowhere for example. Anyway, it should be a new 2014/15 automobile.

I actually hope it's not a Skoda. For me Almost any other car would be more exciting. But we'll see.

Whatever the prototype, I'm glad to hear that Herpa will bring another modern replica to market. They're becoming quite rare. Tony F.

Skodas aren't exciting, but I'd like to see a few more mainstream cars from this era in 1:87. Ever since the model manufacturers lost the ability to produce smaller GM vehicles in HO scale, and other auto companies reduced their purchases of 1:87 promotional models, there's been a dramatic fall off of 1:87 mainstream models. The brands I'd really like to see in 1:87 scale are Volvo, Jeep, Toyota and Lancia. Tony F.

I agree, a Volvo, Jeep, or Toyota would be very nice. Lancia, I don't know. Marchionne drove them pretty much into the ground. I hate to say it, but Lancia looks finished. As for interesting modern automobiles it really is slim pickings these days.

Christian,
Do you have any idea when Herpa is going to announce this new car? I've been asking for modern Volvos for years. I'd take a new FJ Cruiser in a New York second! If it's the new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, then I'll check the sky to make sure it's still there. I'll take anything at this point because it truly has become boring.

I don't, unfortunately. This is what we know from Marc:
"Zwischen den Zeilen ließ sich lesen, dass im Laufe des Jahres voraussichtlich ein weiterer moderner PKW (der nicht von Volkswagen, Audi, BMW oder eben Mercedes-Benz stamme) in den Handel kommen werde, der Ergebnis eines Werbeauftrags für 1:43- und 1:87-Modelle sei."
"Between the lines it was made apparent that Herpa will probably release a new modern car in the course of the year (which will not be a Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, or Mercedes-Benz) and which is the result of a promotional order for 1/43 and 1/87 scale models."

Could even be an Opel then. Or the new Saab.

Christian,
Thanks for the response; whatever it is, I hope it does well for Herpa and makes most of us happy.

Christian,
Thanks for the update! It's refreshing to hear that the planned model will be something other than the brands you mention. I hope that this might spur other auto manufacturers to also place promotional item orders.
Also, you're probably right about Lancia. I would like to see the Lancia Thema (latest Chrysler 300C) in 1:87. It's nice looking and wouldn't require much to produce it in both Lancia and Chrysler guise.
Cor,
I'd also like to see an Opel, but I fear we won't see that brand in 1:87 unless they change their requirements related to the dimensions of HO scale models...or, sell the brand off to another company.

But I am afraid that this are just rumours coming out a personel conversation with no promises.

Let's just say there is a good chance that it will happen.
Tony: I agree that the Thema/300C is a nice car, but it's been on the market for quite a while now and recent statements from Fiat indicate that Lancia will be a one-car and Italy-only make from 2016 onward. It's a shame.

Christian,
Yes, I recently read that. What a shame. It looks like the decision to fold all of the Chrysler portfolio under the Lancia brand was a mistake. The Chrysler 200 and Voyager are hardly up to supporting the Lancia name. It's unbelievable that the line is now down to just one mini-car.
Regarding Herpa's planned model, I have faith in what you and Marc have stated and hope that it's an exciting prototype!

Cor, By the way, you might be correct. If the new Herpa is an Opel, it might be the upcoming 2015 Opel Vivaro van. Here's a rendering: gmauthority.com/blog/2014/02/opel-teases-next-gen-vivaro/It wouldn't be the most exciting prototype to replicate, but would be a welcome addition to our scale. Tony F.

I hate to ask so many questions, but isn't this new announcement supposed to be a modern car? Or should we say modern vehicle other than what Herpa normally makes (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, VW)?
