Dear All,
Slightly of the usual beaten track, but still remaining 87th scale, I am thinking of modelling (not professional, just for my own pleasure) a street encompassing a number of different car showrooms (building kits). However, I wonder whether anyone can help as to what may be available.
To my knowledge, I have the following:
Faller
- Mercedes showroom - obtaining this. - VAG showroom- anyone know where this could be obtained, now discontiued I think. e-bay prices are very high. - new showroom which is generic and not particular to one manufacturer, but very, very expensive. Vollmer
- Porsche garage - saving my pennies for this one.
Busch
- Smart - thinking about that one! not sure I like it.
SAI
- Did they not do a Peugeot or was it Renault kit a year or two back. Cannot find anywhere, did it proceed to being made available ?
Any others ? Any one know of an Opel showroom, would like one of them ?
Thanks for help in advance, Gary

Sylvain,
Hi. Brilliant. Thank you for this information. What a great website, some real old beauties still for sale in the car area and now my project expands to include a Citroen garage too.
Thanks again for taking the time, much appreciated, Gary

Faller did a BMW dealerhsip years ago. It was their special edition for 1990 or 1991, I believe. Both the Volkswagen and Mercedes showrooms you mention are derived from the original BMW set. Their "generic" 2007 special edition showroom is quite close to Volkswagen's current style. A change of colours will be necessary. Vollmer's Porsche Zentrum is beautiful, but I have a hunch it's a 1/100th scale architectural model - the windows are rather low. Still, worth every penny. If you don't like Busch's Smart dealership, convert it to a Ferrari and Maserati showroom. Sounds crazy? Well, it happened in Dortmund where Lueg (usually selling Mercedes) moved out the Smart cars and came back with the Italians: www.luegsportivo.de/ueber_uns.htmlMarc S.

The Porsche dealership is a beautiful model. There are three other kits that I know of: Walther shows a kit by International Hobbies: www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/348-814 This is an old Pola molding that has been used for everything from a car dealership to a bank and computer sales store by various manufacturers. It has also been issued with Volkswagen and BMW markings. Vollmer also issued a special edition model that was a Ferrari dealer. The same basic molding is now used for a Burger King and a nightclub. This special edition model is very rare and hard to find. Plasticville issued a car dealership named "Mirror Motors" back in the 1970's. The same molding (minus the service garage) is now used for an ice cream store. This too is very difficult to find and not molded to the same standard as Vollmer or Faller. I don't know if the Peugeot dealership was actually ever produced by SAI. I have all the kits mentioned in this thread since I once entertained the same idea. I have since run out of room on my diorama.

The idea of having a bunch of car dealerships in a diorama is excellent; and, it was examined in part in a thread I brought forward called, "Mixing Eras and displaying Maximum..." for the good ideas in there.
In addition to the auto dealership buildings listed in this thread there is one by Herpa on p567 of the 2006 Walther's HO Catalog. It is a modern industrial building available in 4 components, one of which is billed as a dealership with some display windows. 2 of the other three buildings could be used as add-on bays for the dealership. This would make a medium to large dealership.
A pretty big GMC truck dealership here in town uses similar buildings. These kits are still available but I could not find a newer catalog to give you the page number.
Many Herpa acc. kits and wheel sets are available separately too.
Sometimes these Herpa kits are also sold under the Promotex name.
And, someone, maybe Herpa, made canopy covered gas pumps with the canopies high enough for semi's -- might be a good detail for a truck dealership.

Faller "AutoHaus Kern", Faller part number 190175/3 which I think is discontinued. Here's one that recently sold on ebay so you can see the pic of it. cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350044856727I got one about 6 months ago for under AU$10 on ebay Australia :-) EDIT: just had a look at the IHC showroom and its obviously based around the Faller one I've mentioned, the main difference being the IHC model has a simple rectangle brickwork addition at the front while the faller one has a more decorative curved one.

Don't forget Cardboard! If you are after an "old fashioned garage" The Superquick 1/76 card model does not look too overscale with 1/87 vehicles. It could probably be easily adapted to look continental as well. See www.ehattons.com/StockDetail.aspx?SID=7888 I know that an impressive card DEA Petrol Station was available from a german manufacturer but am not sure if there are any car showrooms - if anyone knows of any I would be pleased to know! Card is also a good material if you want to have a try at making models yourself to fill in gaps. If you use a card that can go through your computer then you can create the model on the screen - even word processors allow you to create squares, rectangles, and triangles and colour them in and that is just about all you need for a simple building. Save transparent plastic sheets from food packaging et al and the glazing is free. I just wish that I could find more pictures of showrooms on the web to inspire my models - I know that English Heritage was at one time planning a book on British car showrooms but it doesnt seem to have ever appeared. Anyone with any sources of pics?

Dear All:
Motormax is also issuing dioramas, such as Garage Shops and the like which in my opinion could be useful in 1/87 (they also feature one of their 1/64 cars). At first these items were released at the Canadian Market, and now they are avaliable Statewide.

Dear All,
Well, thank you to everyone for their input and links to various websites to help.
Marc - I remember, now you say, the BMW dealership and will try to hunt this down. BMW would be a nice one to have in the diorama. The Smart idea - I love it. It would house all the Redline Ferraris I am collecting - thanks! May go for it now, you persuaded me.
Mark - Yes, I remember briefly seeing the Vollmer Ferrari dealership, now a Burger King outlet (I have that - the Burger King outlet that is!). I did not realise it was so rare, perhaps my 'drive in' Burger King can be dramatically transformed into an up market Ferrari dealership! Am I imagining things or did SAI offer a Peugeot dealership. I am sure I saw one in a catalogue once. Perhaps it is old age getting to me.
Poathjunction - like it, will search around for a cheap one somewhere. Thanks.
Mazwoolley and Keroliver - thanks but not a cardboard fan really. English Heritage - British car showrooms, definitely renew my membershipo this year!!
Nick - I await developments, they are 87th scale aren't they ?
Sylvain - just purchased the Renault and Citroen garages from pierredominique - thanks for that, well pleased.
And a big thanks to all for the input, now to think about the era and buying lots of cars - the fun bit, but expensive!
Thanks, Gary

That Pola building mentioned as Faller car dealership has been issued for at least 5 different car dealerships (by varying the markings and front decorative pillar. And, also as mentioned as a bank and a computer store.
Pola has gotten their money's worth out of those dies.
It has appeared in the US under the AHM, IHC and Model Power names.
Two such buildings could easily be made into a corner "ell" with a repair garage in the space behind for a much larger delership.
