In the early 90's I started modifying my models and I began by wanting to have a few nice convertibles of models that didn't have such a variation of their own. So I made a Renault 5, Suzuki Swift, etc. in 'Convertible-mode'. Next was a Ferrari 250 GTO, which I thought would look great in a one-seater Speedster variant, inspired by the open racing cars that you could see competing in Endurance-style races such as Le Mans. I never finished this model, because it didn't really work out the way I wanted it to, but maybe I'll still finish (change) it someday... uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/sabuu_87/album?.dir=111cscd&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//uk.pg.photos.yahoo

I'm currently working on a 1994 Opel Astra (you know, the facelifted model with clear turning-signal lenses up front, different grille and hubcaps, and some more tiny detail changes). The only thing I'm not sure about, is the color I want it to be. I'm thinking some metallic color, like light beige or dark green. Any suggestions? uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/sabuu_87/detail?.dir=/111cscd&.dnm=8b5ascd.jpg

It seems to me that back in 1994 dark metallic green was just about the only colour available for cars. In any case, make sure you pick a colour that was only available on facelift Astras.
Lovely model, I enjoy seeing the workbench photos. Are those the hubcaps you will be using, or do you have an ace up your sleeve? How did you make the clear turn signal lenses?

These are indeed the hubcaps I will be using, they are prototypical for the facelited GL-version of the Astra (and correspond with the ones used on the Herpa Corsa of this time-period). The only thing I'm not completely happy about, is that they look a bit small. They are actually the right size, but the tyres I fitted them to are slightly too big... I'm searching for an alternative. The clear lenses come straight from an Astra GSi that I bought just for this purpose.

Ah yes, you are right. Good luck with the tire hunt. I assume that the Corsa tires are entirely too small?
Your models always inspire me to sit down at my desk and do something. They are nearly always of prototypes with which I have some sort of personal relationship, and always modifications which I would be interested in doing myself. Things like eexjoe's Mammoet Kenworth inspire me with awe perhaps, but I never get the itch in my fingers from looking at them. Rather, they cramp up with fear and ineptitude.
Is your Astra a 1.4? It somehow gives off that anemic vibe...
And finally, what is going to happen to the GSi's carcass?

...I assume that the Corsa tires are entirely too small?...Is your Astra a 1.4? It somehow gives off that anemic vibe...And finally, what is going to happen to the GSi's carcass? Indeed the Corsa's tires are too small. The trick is to find tires that are wide enough for the Astra, small enough to fit the Corsa's hubcaps, but still big enough to fill the wheelarches nicely... (the Corsa's actual tire-size was 165/65 R14, the Astra has 185/60 R14). The best compromise that I found sofar are the ones fitted to the Astra momentarily... The GL was the entry-level model, and was indeed available with the more anemic engines, starting off with a 1.4! So yes, that could be this one I don't have any serious plans with the GSi yet, but perhaps a nice rally or race-version would be an option...

Hi there! After almost 2 years of being absent from this forum due to a lot of stuff going on in my personal life (mostly good things, like having a wonderful son, now 10 months old), I decided it was finally the right time to continue my modelling career! (I didn't stop collecting in the past years, if that was what you were thinking ;D). I would like to show you the project I'm doing at this moment: since Welly decided to bring us a proper 1:87th scale Land Rover Defender early this year, I thought of a way to honor that decision by creating a perhaps not-so-obvious but ever so attractive looking variant I remember from going to Italy: the Carabinieri (police) version. Some obvious things had to be changed first, as you can see in the pictures, like the wheels (using the ones from Roco's excellent 109 model) and changing the 2 rear seats into 4 foldable chairs (molded from the front seats from 2 old Herpa Opel Omegas). Then a little paint to see what's it's going to look like at first glance. So this is just a start, hope to have it ready in about 2-3 weeks! I'll keep you posted... By the way: here's a link to the original car: www.fiammeblu.it/albums/userpics/10054/LR_Defender_90_SW__CC_AD828_01.JPG

Congratulations on the birth of your son. Your life will surely take a turn now. And welcome back after such a long hiatus. The work so far on the Defender looks great. Chester

Thanks! It's a lot of fun having a little boy crawling around (fortunately, my HO collection is hidden well) and a lot of fun being busy with this hobby again! Next pictures show the Defender with it's new interior painted:

Welcome back on the forum and take care in two or three month´ with your son. My daughter ate a lot of the small wheels of my models with around a year and later....... The carabinieri looks great. The blue maybe is to lighten, I will have a look for the colour I used for the italian police. But really never was satisfied with the dark blue either. Hope you will find enough time for our hobby. Good luck nick In case you plan some decals, I would very interested in that as well.....

Nick, did you ever find those wheels back? Well, I put all of my small parts (and actually, the Defender is one big small part!) behind closed doors, where no small hands can find them, but thanks for the good advice anyhow! This is a picture of the Defender so far: I think it captures the feeling of an eighties' Land Rover 90 quite nicely and I have to say, I quite like it like this already! For decals, I plan to use the ones from the TL-Decals set 1105 ("international police")...

Looks really good already. Nice touch with the black wheel center, very realistic!
