I think it's almost impossible to paint a crane in a realistic way (including weathering) and allowing it to move. Anyway.. I thank you all for the appreciacion and I hope to finish the model in the next monts (even if summer isn't the right season for modelling).

Barnaba, I don't know what product to recommend in Italy, but here in craft stores, they sell something called "RubnBuff"used to put faux finishes on picture frames and such. It's actually a wax product so it makes telescoping booms work very well. I know most booms don't lose their paint so easy but I use silver and on hydraulic pistons too. I took a sable brush and cut it down to about 1/8" long bristles and "scrub" the RubnBuff on. It's also a great product for doing blades and shovels and the like on earthmoving equip. to get the worn metal look.

Chester, thanks for your suggestion about using rub'n'buff. I've tried to find it with google and it looks to be a paste made of wax and metallic powder: I'll try to ask for something similar in Italy. I was going to use a chrome paint for pistons; have I to apply rub'n'buff over the chrome paint? Does it cover up the paint? Anyway, the problem still remains on the telescopic boom, because it's painted in balck and covered with grease.

There are ( or were ) chemical blackeners for metal. They are clear solutions that cause a black oxide to form on most metals. Hobby Black was sold in the US 10-20 years ago; I don't know whether it is still available. It would blacken copper, brass, zamac, etc. But did not affect stainless steel or alumninum.
Lubrication with graphite powder also may be of interest for appearance and function, possibly over a chemical blackener.

I don't know the balck oxide, but the problem is that boom is partially made of styrene and the oxide will not affect it. If I find Rub'n'buff and Blacken it in Italy, I'd try to use them, otherwise I'll use standard paints.
