OK, I've made some progress on the base work itself. pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/stryper50/album?.dir=4ce5&.src=ph #14 is the wharf again weathered and I started the high tide mark on everything at waters edge like the pilings and granite wall. #15 decided against another tin roof and went for tar paper. It is #600 grit sandpaper cut in strips. Not visible are the hundreds of nail heads in the tar paper. #16 here's my weak point at this stage. The Heki pine tree is a sad representation and will not be there. Much of what you see is natural material like moss from stones out back and a little parasitic air plant found on the trees around here called "old man's beard" I need to take some time and devote it to vehicles, figures and other details now so the base will probably sit in it's present state until I get more done on them. This diorama building stuff is a way for me to bring more realism to the vehicles. One thing it is teaching me is how many different ways there are to get a particular look to something in this scale. I also am trying to record all of the different things I do with the camera and lighting to achieve the look I want. I'm anxious to have an opportunity to get this outdoors in natural light. This is the most fun I've had, outside the bedroom, in a while. (I know, I need to get out more)

Chester, More impressive photos. Even your weak area of the tree border has a realistic variety of size, shape, texture especially when photographed from a low angle. You will do well with the trees you have. Do trees even grow well so close to the sea? I searched my collection of model rail magazines and discovered that I have not given trees their due when selecting magazines for purchase. If in the future you want some specimen tree models, the best articles found in my magazine collection for deciduous hardwoods are: Mainline Modeler, 4 part series February-April 2003. I have part 3 only. These are very realistic trees and seem achievable when only a few are needed. They are sage brush armatures with additional branches, netting from Sweetwater or teased 3M scouring pads, and leaves are a small flake material. Mainline sells back issues on their web site, www.mainlinemodeler.com. I am assuming that some basic techniques were discussed most thoroughly in part 1. Railmodel Journal, November 1999. Similar results to the Mainline Modeler article, but different materials used. Armatures again are sage brush. Fine branch structure and green leaves are from Scenic Express or Noch tree forms. Leaf sources are Woodland Scenics ground foam and Noch loose leaf flakes. All of these suppliers were in Walthers at the time. Model Railroader , April 1993. This article is a practical way to make trees in a larger number. Foilage and fine structure are Peppergrass, a commercial dried floral product. Floral tape was used to bind it together for larger branches and trunks, then it was dusted with green spray paint. Water putty built up trunk texture, then the putty was sealed and some bark texture was painted with acrylics. Finally Floquil was used for painting the bark. This article was by Lou Sassi who models and lives in New England somewhere. Maybe some of your model railroading friends have some connections to tree modelers? Trucks for trees? best regards, Dave

Thanks Dave I am archiving your response for use. Looks like a trip to the craft store is in order.

You are off to a very good start, Chester. The best advise that I could give you now is take your camera outside and take photos of real things such as roads, building details, foundations, trash piles, etc. that you may like to copy all or part of. The camera remembers a lot more detail than the mind does. Someone makes lobster pot kits using photo etching. I think they are in the Walthers book.

#18 & 19 Some success with small trees. "Some sucess"? They look just like the volunteer Box Elders that start up next to foundations and walls. Your detailing of the tidal stains is wonderful. Thanks for posting more photos. Dave

Chester, being somewhat of a diorama nut myself I have been following this thread with a lot of interest. There are a lot of nice ideas and lots of craftmanship in this diorama already (that floodline is amazing !) and if you ask me it can only get better. There is just one thing I don't like, ...the pictures are too small! Eric

I can't even look at these pictures - I am very impressed, and also inspired. You make things look a lot easier than they would be for us mortals.

Eric, Thanks, when all is done I'll send you a few larger pictures. Yahoo doesn't allow for expanded views anymore. When you say it can only get better does that mean it has a lot of room for improvement? HÃ¥kan, Thanks, this stuff is so much fun I can't seem to break away from it and I'm learning so much just by experimentation. (the trees were done on a whim and shazaam! cool little trees all of the sudden)
