Toylike shmoylike. Weathering (especially weathering this good) will make just about anything look real.

Interesting technique Nick. I agree rust makes the best rust. Try collecting the dried rust powder (I use steel wool pads) and putting it in a little alcohol. Then you can paint the rust where you want it.

I collect rust too! I use it dry as powder, but I'll try your technique with alcohol. I also scrape Windsor and Newton pastels with sandpaper to make powders that I use as rust and other natural earth. I also have some ochre powders in different tones I picked up in Roussillon (France), where they are extracted.
